Norton Family still changing the Computer Name

Hi,

Please refer back to this post, where I complained about Norton Family truncating the Computer Name, and adding on "_WIN7" or "_WIN8", when you view the Norton Family account settings online.

Well, it's doing it again.

We have a bunch of kids computers, and the only difference in the Computer Names is the number at the end.

Norton Family then comes along and messes things up by truncating the computer name and adding on "_WIN7" or "_WIN8".

This behavior was introduced with Version 2.8.0.5. And it is inconsistent. Sometimes it does this, sometimes it doesn't. This is but one more annoyance of many with NOF.

If the developers want to differentiate between Windows 7, Windows 8, Android or God knows what else, then please tell them that the correct way to to this is to ADD A FIELD TO THE DATABASE!!! In other words, "DEVICE TYPE"!!! Do NOT use the computer name for this purpose. It's called a kludge.

I gave the computers their names for a reason, and I want them to be listed in Norton Family with the names that I gave them, thank you very much. So please stop playing around with the computer name.

Thank you.

And what was the answer please - I have more computers showing up than I have Norton Family running on.  I have had to uninstall and re-install so many times that the names now mean nothing to me and I can't see which computer is which.

Perhaps this has been addressed now - since when I added a new machine (daughter's new Christmas Present) it let me choose the actual name as part of the initial installation.

Can my account just be cleared so that I can uninstall and re-install and then set the names how I want them to be for my other two PCs?

Hi madmuso,

Please go to Settings -> Profile after you log onto your Norton Family online account, and check which devices are not being used, then remove them (by clicking "Remove computer" link and Save button).

If it's hard for you to tell which computer is which, you should be able to see the websites are viewed or blocked from which computers (by checking the details of the websites at Activity -> Web), that should help you to find out which computers are being monitored.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Katie

Is this problem, where the computer name is being changed and/or the computer name you want is not being prompted for, related to this problem and this problem, Norton Family Server is temporarily unavailable?

When can we start seeing some releases that address these issues?

Hi dbdan22 It is not related to those problems - as far as I am aware - although I had problems like that a while ago and uninstalled NF and then re-installed again.

So KatieQ:

The first time I installed NF on the computers the names were displayed correctly in the portal.  But when I did the re-install the names changed to {Firstpart of name}Win7 and {Firstpart of name}Win7[1].  Both my PCs have the same {Firstpart of name}.

I have been able to remove the records that were created the first time and are no longer used.  And now I can tell which computer is which using the method that KatieQ suggested but I don't see why I should have to.  It's annoying and unexplained as to why this happenned.  I'd like to be able to reset whatever records we have on the NF system for these PCs and re-install,. re-configure or whatever is needed to get the names reset to the actual names of my PCs.

Is this possible?   I'd appreciate a simple yes or no (and it yes then instructions on how to do it)  Thanks :smileyfrustrated:

Hi madmuso,

We introduced this change(appending the OS Name against the Machine Name) from our 2.8 release.  What you are experiencing is expected behavior.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know.

Thanks,

Katie

I am wondering if the Norton Family team works for the great company that is Symantec or some circus somewhere...

What you are doing is not appending the OS to the end of the computer name - but Replacing the last part of the name with the computer name.

I initially thought this was because you had a limit in the field length of 13 characters but in the case of my PCs one of the names you have ends in Win7 and is 11 characters, the other is Win7(1) and is 13 character.  But you have deleted five characters from one of my pc names and six from the other.  This is all totally random and shows that you haves some kind of design flaw.

If this is intended behaviour then you have some rather wrong intentions and need to fix it by adding another field in your database if you need this information.  Don't overwrite information we need with stuff you need to run the platform.

Please commit to fixing this and give us a timsecale...

Well it's a bad idea and it should be removed.

I'd love to hear the developers' reasoning for this misguided "feature". Why don't you show them my first post above?

Hi madmuso & dbdan22,

Thanks for your feedback.  I'll pass along you suggestions to the Norton Family team.

Thanks,

Katie

Please see this screen shot.

Here we have 5 computers.

Two of the computers, 1 and 2, have _WIN7 appended to the computer name. Actually, it overwrites the last 5 characters of the name, which forces me to shorten the name.

The rest of the computers do not have _WIN7 appended.

These were added to a new Norton account on the same day, in late December.

Now let's put aside for a moment why, as I pointed out in my first post, appending _WIN7 is a bad idea.

Be that as it may, it can't even do it consistently.

Sometimes it asks what you want to name the computer, sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes it appends _WIN7, sometimes it doesn't.

I have an idea.

Stop this insanity now.

Ask the user what they want to name the computer, and then leave it alone. The way it used to be, before the developers screwed it up in version 2.8.0.5. It gives the user a sense of control. I'd love to hear the developers' reason for changing this.

Put it back the way it was. You think that's possible?

Hi dbdan22,

Thanks for the post.  I'll pass the information to the team.

Thanks,

Katie
