Norton Firewall blocks Screen Sharing

What are the appropriate settings for Norton Firewall (newest version) to allow Screen Sharing from another Mac? I cannot successfully connect to allow Screen Sharing.

Hi geodon005,

This problem can happen if the Screen Sharing service is disabled in System Preferences>Sharing on your Mac. Norton Firewall blocks inbound connections from all the services that are disabled, regardless of its Connection Blocking settings. To fix the problem, enable the corresponding service (Screen Sharing) from Mac OS X System Preferences.

Let us know if the service is already enabled, and you still aren't able to share the screen.

Thanks,

Lucky

Screen Sharing is indeed enabled, and I still cannot share the screen.

Try the following steps and see if it fixes the issue:

  1. Start your Norton Product and click Firewall.
  2. In the NIS window, click Firewall and then under Connection Blocking, click Configure.
  3. In the dialog box, enter the user name and password for the Administrator of your Mac.
  4. Under Connection Blocking, next to View, from the drop-down menu, select Services/Ports.
  5. Click Add service...
  6. In the New Service window, next to Service name, type "Screen Sharing/VNC" and the service will pop up with default port numbers under Ports.
  7. Click Save and then click Done.

Retry establishing a connection remotely to verify if the Screen can be shared now, if not then please let us know.

I set the Firewall as you instructed, but still cannot connect or access Screen Sharing.

Can you please answer the following:

  1. Are you trying to remotely manage the target Mac within an internal network or from an outside network?
  2. Have you enabled the OS X firewall also along with the Norton product, as it will block port 5900 until you uncheck Block all incoming connections in Firewall options?
  3. Can you ping the target Mac from the host system?
  4. What version of Mac OS are you running on the target computer and which OS are you using on the host machine?

Also, try repeating the steps 1-3 from my previous post and this time select Zones. Click Add IP address... and from the drop-down select All IP addresses on a network. Under the Base address, add the IP address of the computer from which you will access the screen of this Mac(Target) and then click on Use My Subnet. Save the setting and try to access the Screen Sharing service again.
