Issue abstract:Printers will not print with Norton Firewall on.
Detailed description:With Norton Firewall on, printers show “ready” but will not print. With Norton Firewall off, printers work fine. I do not have Norton VPN activated so that is not the issue. Both HP and Epson troubleshooters show printers “ready to print”–but the printers will not print unless the Norton Firewall is disabled. Note that Windows shows the printers as “offline” unless Norton Firewall is disabled.
Product & version number: Norton 360
OS details:Windows 11 (upgraded from Windows 10) Updates current
What is the error message you are seeing? No error message, but Microsoft shows printers “offline” when Norton Firewall is on.
If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:
Thank you. I reset the firewall every time I print since I must turn it off to print and back on as soon as I finish. Resetting does nothing. I was hoping someone would have an idea for which setting to change and where to find those settings.
@NEIL_E_LOWELL A bit more info may help us help you better:
-What is your version and build on Windows 11? Aka- Windows 11 Home/Pro 25H2 (26200.8737) is the current consumer build.
-What is your version and build on Norton 360? Version 26.6.11052 (build 26.6.11052.988) is the latest.
-Are you Wifi / Ethernet connected to the internet?
-When your computers are blocked is your network type set to private? If so that setting will allow local network connectivity to other devices on that network. Changing your network type to public will isolate other devices one from another. Using a VPN should follow those settings as well.
My Windows is the latest (What you show). My Norton is 26.5.10994 (Build 26.5.10994.984). Not sure why mine is different because I install all updates as Norton sends them. My Internet connection is coax cable (Spectrum) to a modem to a router to WiFi (Bluetooth is enabled for phones but the system is WiFi) to computers/printers. I believe you have the “specs” for “private” versus “public” reversed. Security is much tighter on “public” networks (your local McDonald’s for example.) In theory, the firewall should allow access to all connected devices on a “private” network. In my case, the Norton Firewall is blocking print jobs sent to either of my printers, but allows “trouble-shooting” programs to find and verify the printers as “ready to print”–although Windows shows them as “off-line.” I can print by turning off the Norton Firewall, but it is a royal pain turning it off and then back on for every print job.
Touche! Point well taken. I hate restoring defaults because then I have to go back through and reset my settings–but then I might find which one is causing the problem, right? I’m not doing it tonight, but will tackle it tomorrow before I have to print again.
