Ran Norton Removal Tool to remove another Symantec product. Removal Tool also removed Ghost but I was not concerned since I have original disk with Product Key Code. Unfortunatley I have not been able to Activate after re-installation of Ghost 10.0.
It seems to install Ghost OK but the Activation Window just sits there with the hour glass when I click on Next . I do not even get to a screen where I can enter Product Key Code.
I have tried running Norton Removal Tool multiple times in a row before re-installing, tried install in Safe Mode with Networking, tried turning off Anti-Virus protection. I also tried working with Symantec Chat and was told:
- Internet Explorer must be my default browser (so I changed from Firefox to IE as default)
-Firewall must be turned off (I tried this too).
None of the above worked (of course I have rebooted PC both hard and soft). However, no problem with Live Update. I am using XP. I have had Ghost 10.0 installed for two years without any problems prior to this.
Any suggestions. Thanks.
I have not installed SP3 (still have SP2 on XP). But, yes I can run Live Update before Activation. I did notice one thing today while it installed 2 updates (Symantec Security Update, Norton Ghost update) from Lve Update :Got this pop up message from task bar:
" Unable to connect to agent. Service not running." I did check XP Services and Norton Ghost was started and set to Automatic. Regardless, Live Update reported updates successful. Still, Activation hangs at Activation Screen. By the way, the reason for running NRT was to remove Norton 2007 (and Norton Ghost got removed as a byproduct).
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. Very frustrating problem.
OK, here are my thoughts for what they are worth. I think when you resolve this you should update to SP3. There really is no reason not to in my view.
The error msg I have seen twice before but not with Norton 360 or Ghost. I am wondering if in fact the liveupdate is out of sync, given that you previously installed Norton 2007. There is a tool to reset which I need to get you. or which perhaps another guru can advise.
I think you should also run luall from the run command and see what additional msgs you get.
Lastly, I am wondering if you should uninstall and reinstall GHost and without using liveupdate, attempt Activation. What do you think?
I installed Ghost 10 again and tried running luall from command prompt and it completed successfully . No errors. However, Ghost still hangs at Activation screen.
Worked with Symantec "CHAT" again today . After doing Norton RemovalTool, & yet another re-install of Ghost10, it still failed to Activate. Tech thinks it's a problem with Ghost10 itself and Activation. Had me disconnect internet cable connection before hitting NEXT at Activation screen. He thought I would get a prompt for "phone Activation". I did not. He is checking further. His other suggestion is to upgrade to Ghost 14.
As far as: "Lastly, I am wondering if you should uninstall and reinstall GHost and without using liveupdate, attempt Activation." I tried this in the past and no luck.
Thanks for your comments. I would be glad to try that reset tool.
I spent 2 1/2 hours on CHAT with Symantec today with zero progress. I had to go over entire problem again (even after I gave them existing case number). They insisted Phone Activation should work as an alternative but it did not. At the end of the chat I was told I needed to wait 48 hours for problem to be researched further. Very bad; I may start looking at alternative backup software like Acronis.
Today I ran NRT again, reinstalled Ghost10, then Activation hung again, ended Ghost Activation in Windows Task Manager. Then I ran Live Update and noticed this error: “Live Update has determined that this machine is running a pre-released or Beta version of a 2005 Symantec Product.” After that, Live Update advised that updates not installed. Norton Ghost 10 is the only Symantec product on my computer. I don’t know if this is related to Ghost Activation but I did purchase this product 2 years ago and have hard copy of manual, CD, and envelope for CD with Product Key number on it.
It would be very much appreciated if a Symantec employee would comment.
I noticed I have multiple versions of Microsoft .NET Framework already installed: 1.1 and 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366) along with .NET Framework 2.0 SP1.
I don't know if these would cause problems with Activation ( it hangs when Activate Now is selected BEFORE key code is even entered).
Also, Microsoft Windows Event Viewer shows "Application Hang" error for CfgWiz.exe 5.0.0.57 that correlates with Activation hang (which makes sense).
Does Internet Explorer have to be my default browser for Activation to work as Chat tech advised? I did follow his advice.
Thanks.
Update, some progress:
1.Ran NRT
2.Ran Norton AutoFixTool from IE
3. Ran SYM KBFix.exe
4. Ran SymADataWeb
5. Re-installed Ghost 10 and was NOT asked to activate or enter product key code. Good news.
6. Ran Live Update - completed OK installing two updates "Symantec SecurityUpdate" and "Norton Ghost"
7. Rebooted
Two Problems:
1. Now Ghost 10 starts and seems to work except it will not "Explore Recover Points" in Recovery window. It sees the V2i files but as soon as I hit Explore it hangs: both Windows Explorer and Ghost Explorer hang. Tried this on multipe Recover Points (both internal drive and external USB drive.
However, if I use Recover My Files and then BROWSE , no problem. Also created a successful Recovery Point (and able to view in Browse but not Explore).
2. Ran Live Update a 2nd and 3rd time and got message "Live Update has determined this machine is running pre-released version of 2005 product. This version is not supported by Symantec and cannot be updated."
So major problem seems to be solved regarding Activation but Explore fails (Browse OK) and now Live Update error message above. Ghost is the only Symantec Norton product on PC.
I sorry to hear that you have run into a variety of issues. Let's see what we can do about the remaining ones.
On your browser issue, I'm going to have to wander over and tackle a developer. But unfortunately since the developer has left for the day that won't be until Monday at the earliest. I need to ask a few questions before I can even make a suggestion.
On the LiveUpdate issue, I have a hunch, but first, what is the full version number string in Help | About? I need it to know if I'm on the right track or not.
Appreciate your reply. Here is the current info from Ghost 10 "about":
Norton Ghost 10.0Version: 10.0.3.20387
Status: Activated
OK, you have stumped our developers. The only concrete suggestion I could get out of them was to try the FixInstall.bat that is in the C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost directory, then reboot. The reboot is very important after running FixInstall.
As to the version and LiveUpdate. You have the latest version of Ghost 10. I personally don't anticipate further changes in that version since all attention has turned to later versions and beyond.
Hey all. Found this discussion because I too am having problems with Ghost 10. I just requilt my HDD. XP Pro. I reinstalled Ghost 10. Ran the updates successfully. My habit is to always run updates at least twice on any new software install. On the seconf update I got the following message.
---------------------------Symantec Common Client Update---------------------------
LiveUpdate has determined that this machine is running a pre-released or beta version of a 2005 Symantec product. This version of the software is not supported by Symantec and cannot be updated. Please contact the vendor that you purchased the software from to request a released version of the software.
Sound familiar.
So I took the CD and installed on a second computer that has never seen Ghost (also XP Pro). Same thing happened. (using evaluation method on the second computer.
Looks like Symantec has created a problem.
Also on the new HDD is NIS 2009. but not on the other computer.
I hope Symantec can fix this.
Any updates on this issue? I also have the same problem...
(Re-installing Norton Ghost 10 on XP SP3, backup hangs, LiveUpdate fails with above-mentioned message ("LiveUpdate has determined that this machine is running a pre-released or beta version of a 2005 Symantec product....")
Spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with support, they weren't able to solve the problem.

Pity that you had to use NRT. Ghost uninstall is actually considered sufficient and NRT unnecessary. However, you are right the NRT in this case is not decerning and removes more than one product. Ghost is XP compliant, but I wonder if the issue is that your XP is probably now updated to SP3, whilst the GHost 10 on your CD will not have had the upgrade applied. Is it possible to install Ghost 10, and get it updated via liveupdate before going to activation?
