Norton Ghost-10 has been installed on my WinXP-pro SR3 machine for years. Today, it stopped functioning. It states my "introductory license has expired." Norton Chat says GHOST license, "doesn't expire, it is a perpetual licensed copy. " I have the original Ghost-10 installation disc. If I seek to reinstall, will is mess up the current version of Norton Internet Security and/or other applications?
I also have GHOST-14 installed on several other machines. Is it too going to expire?
I see that Norton is discontinuing Norton Ghost probably because there are compatibility problems with Windows7 or Windows8. My issue is that unlike Microsoft, I don't need Windows7 or Windows8 to write letters or compute billing information.
Must I now buy and learn how to use a copy of Symantec System Recovery 2013.
I've got Ghost 10 in a Windows XP Virtual Machine right now, but it is activated. I don't see a way to change serial numbers.
If yours is not activated, it should ask for a serial number and / or online activation.
I wonder why it became unactivated? Was a registry cleaner or something involved?
You could consider recovering to a date that it was still activated correctly.
If you are happy with Ghost 10, you should still be able to use it. If you are happy with Ghost 14, same thing.
Ghost 15 is the only version that supports Windows 7. Some say they can use Ghost 12 / 14 with Windows 7. I wouldn't rely on it, especially if it is a 64-bit version. Right now SSR 2013 is compatible with Windows 8, but not 8.1. I personally hate Windows 8 and don't use it, so it doesn't affect me. BTW, you should check out WIndows 7, especially if you have a PC that is 64-bit.
Very much to my surprise... PROBLEM SOLVED . In the window stating that trial subscription had expired was a option to purchase a license. When I clicked on that link, GHOST checked back with the Norton Data Base and then asked if I wanted to register the software. It even automatically displayed the original product key. A quick click and it appears that all is well again.
Speculation .. Error may have be caused by trying to launch Norton Ghost when Internet connection was broken. Without connection, Ghost could not verify license. Just a thought.
I don't think Ghost 10 checks it's license once entailed and activated on the internet. Hardware changes MAY have caused a loss of activation. Anyway, I think Ghost 10 is the only one that needs online activation.
I had Ghost 9 as part of SystemWorks 2005 Pro (or whatever it was called) SystemWorks had online registration if I remember correctly. Since the installer for SysWorks handled installing Ghost 9 it activated and licensed it. I was never able to install Ghost 9 independently because you had to use the SysWorks installer. Anyway, I think the standalone Ghost 9 did not require online activation, just the serial number. I'm Glad Norton got away from this PITA step!
