Norton Ghost 14 backup history destination drive letter changed

I have been doing recovery points and "File and Folder" backups to my external F: drive for over a year with  no problems.  Recently, I briefly connected an old USB drive that I used to use as my backup destination long ago.  Windows assigned it M:.  I disconnected the drive shortly after, just needed to look for something.  A few days later I discovered that Ghost has automatically changed the backup destination on all my jobs from F: to M:, and also changed the drive letter on my entire history of recovery points from F: to M:.  Oddly, the backup destination on my "file and folder" backup history is still F:.

Of course, without my knowledge, my backups weren't taking place because M: was no longer there  and Ghost had changed the drive letter on my backup jobs.

Thankfully I discovered what was going on and fixed everything so the backups can resume, but now my backup history is messed up.

Is there any way that I can get Ghost (or some manual method) to fix my backup history, to change the drive letter from M: to F:, the way it was before Ghost  mucked it up?

A couple questions for you.

What is the full version of Ghost you are using (14.x.x.x)?

When you set up the backup job originally, did you choose the drive letter or did you label the drive?

Did you receive a prompt about wanting to use the new drive as a backup destination?  If so, did you make a choice or did the prompt eventually go away?

When you attach the drive, do you explicitly map the drive letter or do you let Windows manage it?

I am using 12.0.5.29804 (sorry, I wrote 14 in subject, I manage several computers and some have v14).

Not sure what you mean by the 2nd question.  When I setup the backup job originally,  I just entered the destination location (f:\backups\).

I recall a prompt when I plugged in the new drive, but don't recall if I selected No or just ignored it.  Definitely would not have selected Yes.

When either drive is attached, Windows manages the drive letter.

Since you have access to version 14, could you see if the same thing occurs with 14?

While choosing a backup destination, you should be able to "create a name" or "label" for that drive so it will allways associate that drive regardless of what drive letter Windows assigns to it.

Is there a way to fix the history database (change the drive letter back) now that it has been messed up?

Easiest way is to delete the backup job and set a new one up.

But that won’t affect the history?  The backup job is fine, I just changed the drive letter on it back to the correct setting, and made sure the default backup destination has the correct drive letter.  My issue is in the backup history, the drive letter on all my old backup jobs was changed from F: to M:, and so now when I go to Manage Backup Destination and select F:, nothing shows up except the most recent backups that have happened since I corrected the drive letter.  F: has many recovery point sets on it currently going back months, and they used to show up in the “Manage Backup Destination” window until this incident.

The index for those backups has been modified.  Are you able to select M?  If you can, you can select M and then choose “Move” and select F.  That would then “move” them from M to F (not sure if this will work exactly as I’m not sure exactly what happened here).

M: is no longer connected.  If I connect any drive, it gets assigned M:, and in the Ghost pop I select “Yes” to use as backup destination, and then I can select M: in manage backup destination, but all the previous backups are unavailable since they don’t exist on that drive, so can’t be moved.  Is the backup history kept in an editable format somewhere so I can just search and replace M: for F:?  This shouldn’t be so hard.  Thanks.

Unfortunately no.  Did you manually move the backup sets to F from M?

No, the backup sets have always been on F:

Sorry for the confusion.

To confirm, the image files are still on the F drive and at no point where any of the images on M.

If that's the case, you should be able to use Tools | Options to modify the reference.

If images where created on M at one point and then manually moved back to F, then you would need to use Manage Backup Destination | Move with those images back on the M drive and use the wizard to move to F.

Yes, the image files are still on the F drive and at no point where any of the images on M.

Where in Tools | Options can I modify the reference?  If you mean change the default backup destination, that doesn't change anything in the previous history.
