Norton Ghost 14 Fails with Error E7C3000F: Cannot Read Sectors

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 pc and am running Norton Ghost 14 under Win xp sp3.the program has worked fine for the last 2 -3 years. Now, when I try to do an image backup I receive the following error:

Error E7C3000F: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot read 7872 sectors starting at LBA 96472.

--Error EBAB03F1: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I ran chkdisk which fixed many bad clusters. I even did a disk defrag. Unfortunately the error persists.

I am not experiencing any other problems with my computer at all. In fact my pc runs very well in all aspects. Any suggestions?

Hi MDTurner,

I appreciate your quick response. I understand that there are USB devices that will allow me to copy from my old hard drive to the newly installed drive. Will they allow me to simply copy the entire image or do I have to install windows from my old old cd's (2005) and then use Ghost to resore my latest image backup? Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated as I am not experienced in this area.

Thank you very much,

HT

HT,

Nice computer.

You have images created prior to Ghost producing this error. Where are they stored?

In Disk Management, how many partitions are present on HD0? Sizes and labels?

What is the size of HD0?

Do you have a second HD?

Hi Brian_K,

THANKS  for you reply.  My good backup images are stored on an external hard drive (Maxtor one touch USB drive: 232 GB NTFS).

I have one HD with 148 GB. (Disk 0 has one main partition (drive c) containing 148.95GB NTFS and a tiny 55 MB FAT EISA config.

Your assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

HT,

As mdturner indicated, you probably need a new HD. But first, have you run chkdsk /r  Does it report bad sectors?

Transferring your partitions to another HD will be EASY and you will find the new HD much faster than the one that came with your computer. HDs are cheap. I suggest a 650 GB or 1 TB HD.

How much free space is present in your C: drive?

Thanks Brian_K,

I ran chkdsk with the 'r' option and it reported and fixed bad clusters in 5 files. I have 121 GB free on my hard drive.

HT

It's bad sectors we are interested in. Right click My Computer, Manage, Event Viewer, Application. Find Winlogon (in the Source column) for the time your computer restarted after chkdsk. Double click Winlogon. How many KB of bad sectors?

156 KB in bad sectors.
HT

HT,

Thanks. You need a new HD. No question about it. Get back to us when you are ready to restore your images.

Questions?

Thank you Gentlemen. I will look for an HD. I will also have to check the Dell support center for instructions on replacing the drive. Besides blowing dust, I have never done anything with hardware before I am embarrassed to say.

Once again my sincere appreciation for your kind assistance.

HT

HT,

Get the 9100 manual from here...

Changing a HD in a 9100 is a dream. Take the side of the computer off, undo 2 plugs, grab the 2 plastic rails and remove the HD. Remove the rails and clip them onto the new HD. Reverse the procedure.

Once the new drive is in, will I be able to simply copy everything or will I need to install Windows, drivers etc?

HT,

We'll provide more detail later but here is a summary...

Remove the old HD and clip the plastic rails onto the new HD

Install the new HD (the old HD will no longer be used)

Boot from the Ghost 14 CD into the Recovery Environment

Plug in your USB HD (don't do it earlier as it can prevent the 9100 from booting)

Click Recover My Computer

Restore the Dell Utility partition image

Restore the WinXP image and choose the final partition size

Unplug the USB HD

Boot into WinXP

That reminded me. Take an image (recovery point) of the Dell Utility partition if you don't already have one. If it fails to image, no problems. We can cope without it.

Hi Brian_K and MDTurner,

I am sorry that I did not get back sooner but it took me several days to get the new HD. I replaced my hard drive with a 1TB HD. I decided to clone the old drive with the use of a USB to SATA interface cable. Everything seems to be working now. I was able to do an image backup with my Norton Ghost 14. I want to thank both of you very much for diagnosing the problem with my HD.  Your quick responses were greatly appreciated.

I do have one question regarding my version of Ghost: since I first installed Ghost 14, I have run live update several times and there were never any updates. Is my version (14.0.5.34587) properly patched?

Sincerely,

HT

HT,

Nice work. I'm glad you are up and running again. I've no idea about the Ghost 14 build

HT,

Not to worry, I use Ghost 12 on XP, Vista and Win7 update or no update, it still performs as you would expect.

Hi Deric,

OK Thanks for the information. That is  good to know.

Take care,
