Norton Ghost 14: problem managing disc space of backup destination

HI,  am really getting frustrated with Ghost 14.   I am using a 1T external disc  for back ups.  My PC is partitioned into two discs c: and E:.  I do two backups.  One of E: and one of the C: and E: drives together.  I have set the disc space to 466G and asked that Ghost manage 3 version of the backups.

However I get 3 versions of the E: drive which are shown separately when I view manage backup.  But up to 6 of the pair of partitions.  Moreover these 6 are all together in the same backup set so that I cannot remove 1 or 2, but have to delete all of them together.  With the  risk that I lose all my backups.

Also backup drive is continuously filled up, even though the allocated space is 466G and there is only another 200g used by other files stored on the disc.

Why is norton not managing the combined backup properly?

Why is it not deleting old reciovery points?

why is it filling up my external disc?

Any advice would be helpful (I'll moan about the other issues later)

The total backup space is some
