Norton Ghost 14 restore what did I do wrong?

My daughters 40 gig hard drive was having trouble booting and ghost 10 showed bad sectors and would not image. I upgraded to 14 selected ignore bad sectors and did the image. Picked up a new 160 gig drive and installed. Did a complete restore 13hrs. and rebooted to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand side. Put my XP survival disk in and finally got to windows with no apparent previous programs so I did a program folder restore and got all the programs in a sub directory of programs. I just started another restore only this time I selected the MBR restore also. The previous restore had the bootable x in place. Am I going to wait 13hrs. to find the same scenario?. I did not format the drive I installed as I did not think it was necessary. All of this would not be to bad if the usb ports on this 2002 Dell inspiron 2650 had higher speed ports but waiting 13hrs. for the finish and looking at a black screen is frustrating.
