Norton Ghost 15.0 having problems detecting C: drive - main drive

Windows does not have a problem detecting this drive and I can explore it like any other drive. I seem to remember backing up the drive so I am pretty sure that it used to work. Basically it shows C: drive in the list of 'available' drives but it is listed as unusuable. Also I am pretty sure I tried another computer program that seemed to think it does not exist - so I am sure that this is not a problem to do with Ghost.

I do not know of any other forum where I could get support for this.

The main drive is a OCZ-VERTEX 2 Sold State Hard Drive so I don't know if this is anything to do with it.

I have other drives - non SSHD ones - and they are recognized fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is the partition info you asked for.

All of the drives have a single partition apart from the my main drive, which has a partition called C: and also one that is System Reserved, this is the SSD.

Hope this helps.

hairyyak,

You missed the question about Disk Management.

You have partition errors on the SSD that almost certainly account for your problem.

Which app did you use to create the partitions? I assume the Win7 installer for the SSD. Win7 Disk Management for the other two HDs?

Disk 1 is your SSD. What are Disk 0 and Disk 2?

Is Disk 4 a flash drive? What's on it?

It is fixable.

Disk Management Screenshot.pngI

There was no Win 7 installer for the SSD. I think I originally had one partition and then when I changed the system so that I could do a System Restore it added another partition. I think it did...I could be wrong.

Disk 0 is an additional internal hard-drive.

Disk 2 is an external USB hard-drive, which I want to back-up to.

Thanks. Drive letters are present in Disk Management. That is one problem you don't have.

Disk 4 is a flash drive. Partinfo doesn't treat them well so we can overlook the errors.

OK. Let's do it. Download BootIt NG. There is a one month trial usage. Unzip the file and make a boot CD.

 double click makedisk.exe, next
dot in I accept the agreement, next
dot in Mouse Support Enabled, next
 dot in VESA Video, next
dot in Partition Work (Don't put a dot in Normal), next
don't choose any Default Device Options (if necessary, these can be chosen in BING), next
 leave Registration strings blank, next
select your CD burner drive letter (you can use a CD-RW or a CD-R disc)
 Finish

Disconnect your USB external HD. We don't want to be confused by extra HDs. Remove your flash drives too.

Boot from the CD....
the BootIt NG CD boots to the Work with Partitions window

As your partitions are 2048 sector aligned you will have to do the following each time you use the BootIt NG CD.

Click Close on the Work with Partitions window and Click Settings.

Make sure there is no tick in..

Align on End

CHS Alternative

Make sure there is a tick in..

Align MBR End HS

Align 2048

Then click  OK and click Partition Work.

Using the radio buttons on the left side of the Work with Partitions window, select the SSD. Be careful as BootIt NG may not see the HD as HD 1. It may be HD 0. The middle area shows the partitions, sizes, etc.

I expect you will see * Errors Exist * at the top of the window and an E next to one or more partitions
click the first E partition to highlight it
hold down left Shift on the keyboard and click Properties
in Additional Information there will be *Warning* File system ends at LBA --------- (numbers here)
copy (type it in) this number to the LBA Information End field. Click OK

click any other E partition to highlight it and repeat the above instructions

the E next to each partition should be gone
 * Errors Exist * should be gone

click Close on the "Work with Partitions" window
click Reboot and remove the CD

Now, does Ghost work? Please attach another partinfo.

Hi,

Thanks for help so far.

I clicked on both partitions for the SSD and there was no notification of errors or an E next to the partitions listed in the window however I did click on properties and it said "Invalid Head and SPT values exist in the BPB. Fix it?". This happened for both partitions.

Any ideas?

Is the SSD showing as HD 0 in BootIt?

I'm not sure what that error means but TeraByte Support said not to fix it unless you can't boot the OS. So leave it.

I would clean up the end of the partition however. Boot from The BING CD, check your 2048 settings again. Select the Win7 partition in Partition Work. Click Resize, OK. In the New Size field, reduce the value by 2 MB. OK, Continue, Close. Close Work with Partitions. Click Reboot and remove the CD.

Does Ghost work? Could you post another PartInfo?

I reduced my partition size by 1 MB by accident. But this did the trick and now Ghost now recongnizes it.

Thanks for much, you've been a great help.

Excellent news. The end of the partition obviously needed cleaning up.
