Norton Ghost 15 - "Automatically Optimize Storage" Not Working

No, not yet.  That was my first instinct, but I was hoping to avoid it.

Hi,
I share your pain. However, failure to do so can allow the corruption to spread. One thing you might try before that is to run CHKDSK /F from the command prompt to see if it's something that the system can repair.

Keep us posted

I am having a similar issue - except mine has never deleted recovery points. I was wondering if you could walk me through how to do in case mine is a setting problem

Thanks

Select your primary drive eg C: and right click and properties and the trools tab then run the first one "Check Now" tick both boxes in the next screen and then run.

A bad example,

I should have said anyother drive other than the primary because if it is use ckdisk will run on a reboot.

Sorry, I'm not getting what you're trying to say. I'm backing up my C and D drives to another hard drive (partitioned). From the tools tab, manage backup destination, settings, I have selected "automatically optimize storage".

I thought you wanted to know how to run ckdisk, You can change optimize storage only if you are running incremental backups.

I would run "One Time backups" that way you can manually delete from the destination drive and clear the history in Ghost.

Auto storage should delete the oldest backups and it will also depend on what % you have set.

Optimizing Storage worked for me after I made one change. After the backup is created and all else works as you expect, Go to list of backups and highlight the one in question. Then work through the system in this path: Ghost > Status > backup name > Edit Settings.  Then work your way down to the fifth or sixth screen when you will find the following screen:

You will still have to delete older backups until the number of backups has been fulfilled PLUS one more. Even if the former name of the backup is identical with the new name, the new incarnation will only remove older backups that are WITHIN it.

The attached screen shows the place I edited settings limiting the number of backup sets. It is reached after you access Ghost > Status > MyComputerBackup > Edit Settings. [Your filename will be as you chose -- not necessarily MyComputerBackup.]

This limiting choice is not termed 'Automatically Optimize Storage' at this point in Ghost 15.

In this instance it allows three sets and, incidentally, (not shown) new ones begin each month. Therefore, in the fourth month, the new backup set will complete before the older fourth one will be deleted.

No joy.  :-(  CHKDSK didn't work, so I'm going to uninstall and reinstall.  Fingers crossed!

Well, crud!  Uninstall and reinstall did NOT work.  I'm stuck having to delete old recovery points manually.  I guess it's not a really big deal, but it does take the "automatic" out of automatic backup.  :manfrustrated:

I suspect that when you make any change to your backup job, it marks the "instruction" file with a new time and date. CONSEQUENTLY, the backup job may not delete sets made earlier than tha edit date.

In that case older backup sets may be still be named the same, but they will be stranded and can only be removed manually.

When the newly edited backup job reaches its limit, it will then begin recording one set more than the limit before it deletes any.

That is, unless you get the backup drive too full and it fails to start a new set because there was no room to do all its work.

Best wishes.

I didn't make any change(s) to the backup job at all.  I didn't even touch my settings for months.  It just happened spontaneously.  That said, I have good news:  problem solved!

I went to the backup drive and noticed that there was an odd backup set there.  It was a job that should have been deleted during an automatic cleanup, but something obviously went wrong during that process.  It wasn't showing up at all in Ghost, but when I deleted it manually from the backup drive, Ghost returned to business as usual.  Everything is copacetic once again!

So . . . it looks like you were sort of right.  Thanks!  :smileyhappy:
