Norton Ghost 15 - Error E0BB0147

Hi there,

I've just installed Norton Ghost 15 in my Lenovo notebook with one drive only.  It can't recognize any drive in my computer and comes up with the following error.  Would you please help?

Error EC8F1780: Cannot successfully reconcile changes since last session.
Error EC8F1771: Cannot enumerate the current drives on this system.
Error E0BB0147: The operation 'Snap Volume' is not currently enabled for this Volume. (UMI:V-281-3215-6016)

Welcome ding,

I have more questions than answers. The error messages seem to indicate that Ghost was run and something has changed since the last time it was run. So, did you have another version of Ghost or some other program that does backups installed prior to the installation of GH15? Also, have you rebooted since the installation? Have you run live update for Ghost to get it up to date? SP1 for that program has been released.

Your file indicates that you are running W7 Enterprise but it doesn't indicate that any service packs have been installed. Based on my reading of the MS site you need to update your copy of W7 as well.

Lastly, you might want to do a control panel uninstall of Ghost, reboot, get W7 updated and then reinstall GH15 and get it updated.

Reboot one more time and try Ghost. If you're still having problems we'll be here

The light's always on:smileywink:

Hi Dick,

I've this error since day one when i install ghost 15.  I thought it was my HD problem, so I uninstall ghost and try Acronics True Image, which can be run on my computer very well.  Then I reinstall ghost but still got the same error message and I pass you these information then.

Ok, let me uninstall Acronics and reinstall ghost and see if it does help.

Installing Windoes SP is a bit difficult for me becuase it all control by my company's IT department.  I will let you know. :)

Hi,

This sounds like a computer on a company network. Does that also mean that you do not have administrator privileges on this machine?

I guess my other question would be why you need to do backups on a networked machine? My office computer is networked and we are given a location to keep files that must be kept/backed up. I keep a few files on a USB external hard drive so that the small drive in the box doesn't get too full.

The only thing I backup for me is my email folder.

If you get this error again, press start>search and type MSINFO32 and press enter. When the screen opens up, press the + sign next to Software Environment, then highlight SYSTEM DRIVERS. In the right-pane, scroll down the list. You should see a driver called SYMSNAP. (This is the Ghost driver that loads during boot to allow incrementals. This is not the same as Symsnap service). The status of SYMSNAP should be STARTED and the Start Mode should be BOOT.

Hi Andreash, I have the exact same problem as Ding who started this thread. I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP3) myself and have been experiencing this exact problem on a random basis during system start. The first indication I get that something is wrong is that I get an error message 'High Priority Error: Error EC8F1780: Cannot successfully reconcile changes since last session.'

This is then followed by the following Microsoft error message: (Windows Event Log)

Shortly after clicking OK to report this error to Microsoft a Red line appears through the Ghost Icon in the system tray. After a brief wait the VProSvc.exe restarts and the Ghost Icon has a green tick.

To answer a few questions for you, I recently used the Norton Remove & Repair Tool to install a fresh copy of NIS 2012 as the previous version 2011 was having problems! Obviously in the process of removal, ghost was also removed (I elected to keep my History) for ghost. Once I had NIS 2012 installed I re-installed Ghost 15 with Administrator rights shortly afterwards and updated to version 15.01

One other thing to assist a possible diagnosis, my backup drive is a 1TB SATA drive which I insert into a 5.25 inch bay caddy on the front of my machine. Effectively ghost see's this as an internal drive! Once my backups are complete I turn off my machine and slide the SATA drive out again for safe keeping. This method of backing up worked really well & without any faults what so ever until I ran the NR&R Tool.

Ghost always takes an eternity to scan my drives now at start up and yet before it was almost instantanious, even without the SATA drive attached! I have just 2 drives inside my machine, C-Drive (Un-partitioned) & D-Drive (Un-partitioned).

Have uninstalled and re-installed Ghost twice now with same problem!

Any ideas?

>> I have just 2 drives inside my machine, C-Drive (Un-partitioned) & D-Drive (Un-partitioned).

Those drives are partitioned with 1 partition each. Otherwise, they could not be formatted.

I'm not sure about your errors, but I would probably uninstall all Norton products again then run the Removal Tool at least twice. Then reinstall Ghost first and see if it works correctly. Then reinstall NIS.

Hi ya, I guess I didn't make that very clear about the partitions! Doh!!! Basically I was trying to say I don't have extra partitions like some people do. :smileywink:

Regarding the uninstallation of Ghost and NIS.., I think I'll hang on for a bit before I do that, I have some other things I want to try with ghost first.

Originally I had problems with NIS 2011 NOT with Ghost 15.01 -- Since uninstalling both products the problem is reversed.., now I have problems with Ghost 15.01 NOT with NIS 2012!! You can perhaps understand my reluctance to uninstall both products again.:smileyindifferent:

I'm also interested to see if the first member who posted here has found a fixed yet. It may help solve my own probs with any luck.

One thing I failed to mention previously was that when I uninstalled ghost the first time around I elected to keep my 'backup history' but when I opened ghost 'Status' window the last backup date for my D-Drive was wrong!! It said that I had not run my backup job for D-Drive since 08 Jan 2011 when in fact I ran the backup job on that drive on 23 Sep 2011. This is also further verified if I look in the 'backup history' window. In fact since 08 Jan I've run my backup on D-Drive a further 3 times, which also shows in the history window. It seems that the status window is wrong for some unknown reason!

I'm hear good reports from friends about 'Acronis True Image', anyone any knowledge about that product themselves? Right now it's quite tempting to ditch ghost altogether. :smileysad:

Hi ya Redk9258,

Okay, so I got bored yesterday and uninstalled both NIS 2012 and Ghost 15.01 as you suggested. I ran the Norton 'removal tool - 2012 version'  and I ran this 3 times with a re-start between each use. Surprisingly the removal tool still left a number of Norton & Symantec folders in my Documents & Settings folder 'All Users' & 'Slinky Grafix' folder! Most of these folders still contained various files (I didn't note the extensions).

I re-installed Ghost 15.01 as an Administrator and then re-installed NIS 2012 and updated to latest version. Both items work (thankfully) but ghost is still taking an eternity to scan my SATA drive!! One thing that is more noticeable is that all my taskbar items appear more quickly.

Another thing which surprised me was that having run the removal tool, NIS 2012 still had my serial number applied when I re-installed it and still showed I had 203 days left on my license key!!! Also my ID safe was still intact as was my password for opening it! So much for the removal tool removing everything!!

Also I restored my ghost history to this location but for some reason the history got all screwed up as it did before when I tried that method!!

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton Ghost

As a result I have deleted all of my existing backups and started a fresh.

Will keep you informed how things go over the coming week.

Slinky

Hi Slinky,

It is normal after using the Norton removal tool or Norton remove and reinstall tool for it to still have your product key and such. This is by design.

Regarding the Ghost history, i can tell you 100% that retaining the Ghost history in the fashion I had you do should not cause any problems. I've done it many times both for testing and after resolving a problem and yes I've used that same method after having to run the NRnR tool myself. I actually tested this method to make sure before I had you try it on the other thread on NIS board.

I'm not sure why it is causing problems for you except perhaps an artifact of the other error you are seeing.

When you said

As a result I have deleted all of my existing backups and started a fresh.

can you clarify what you mean? DId you just start your Ghost history over again or you actually deleted the backups themselves?

I know you are aware that the backups are still fully usable whether they are reflected in Ghost history or not. I would never recommend deleting the actual backups just because of a problem with Ghost history. :smileywink:

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Allen, thanks so much for your input! Good job I didn't delete those remaining files then, it was tempting?!!

Yes it does puzzle me why the history isn't being restored properly, your advice has always been spot on in the past, hence why I sent you a PM. I'm guessing that as it didn't work properly the first time I tried it, I probably copied the same mistake over when I restored the history the next time! It would make sense I suppose.

Yes I do remember we talked long ago about old backups still being useable, the trouble is I've been having various niggles for the last few months and most of which have been included in my backups. Given the problems I was having with my history I decided not to keep any of those 'iffy' backups and to start a fresh. I used Ghost to delete the backups it could see and I deleted the one's it couldn't myself. My data rarely changes that much unless I have a lot of design work on the go and so I'm not too worried about keeping the old backups.

This latest 'fresh install' of ghost and NIS does seem to have ironed out some of the problems I was having so it's not all bad. I built this machine last October and it hasn't crashed once so I must have gotten something right. :smileyhappy:

You did mention a while ago that you new of a way to increase the priority of ghost at startup? I would love to hear more about this, perhaps it will speed up my slow disc scanning which is often what causes ghost's VProSvc.exe to crash at startup.

Thanks again matey peeps!
