I just got my new Samsung 830 Series 128gb SSD which came with Norton Ghost. My plan was to use Norton Ghost to clone my current HDD to my new SSD but I've ran across a few problems. My current HDD is 581g but only 61g are actually being used. My SSD is 128g so I have plenty of room. I can successfully clone my SYSTEM RESERVE partition however I run into problems when trying to clone my main C drive which holds windows and all my apps. This error keeps coming up:
-Error EC8F17B3: Cannot complete copying of Acer (C:\) drive. --Cannot copy source drive to destination location. ---At end of something. ---Cannot copy source drive to destination location. ----At end of something.
I've tried checking the C drive for disk errors and I've defragged numerous times. I'm extremely frustrated at this point and I'm really trying to avoid a clean install of windows. I've looked everywhere for answers and I can't seem to find any. The error itself doesn't help much at all. Any help would be appreciated. I borrowed my friends external HDD to temporarily store all my media and he needs it back soon so, the sooner the better! Thanks
I am having this same problem (on a laptop). Dave, what do you mean by "image and restore method"? You mean the image/system recovery option built into Windows 7?
No, I'm sorry for not being clear. I was meaning use Ghost to create images of the partitions and then restore those images onto the new drive. As opposed to the Ghost "Copy Drive" feature. Unless you happen to have a laptop that can hold 2 hard drives internally. You really need to have the hard drives directly attached to the systems motherboard to ensure you get the correct drive translation, Using an external USB case for one of the drives to do a "copy drive" is just asking for trouble.
But an image is just a large file, using a USB drive to hold an image file is fine.
You said you have the same problem, is your new drive smaller than your old drive or are you having a problem trying to do the actual restore?
As Dave has pointed out there are two methods to "Clone" a HDD, Drive to Drive copy and Image-Restore copy, the former for use with a desktop and the latter for use with a laptop.
If you have a read of these two sets of instructions it should help you understand the process and help you achieve a "Clone".
Have a read of these posts Here and Here the latter being for the laptop.
