Norton Ghost 15 errors

I purchased and installed Norton Ghost 15 last week, from Fry's Electronics (I have the CD version). My computer is running Windows 7 Professional and I have Norton 360 installed also.

The installation completed fine and the first 3 Norton Ghost 15 backups, after the initial install completed fine. I ran them as independent backup jobs.

The 4th backup looked like was working fine and with about 4 seconds left to complete the following 3 messages came up in separate windows:

=========================

Connecting and retrieving information from the backup and recovery service on Home-PC-MSI. Reading Drive information.

- -

This program is unable to connect and communicate with the Norton Ghost backup service on Home-PC-MSI. The remote procedure call failed.

- -

The connection to the recovery agent was lost. The wizard will need to close.

=========================

After the above message boxes were closed I looked in the Norton Ghost backup location and the 4th backup did not show up at all, only the first 3 were shown. Then I used Windows File Manager, and looked in the backup directory and there was a Backup File present for the 4th backup. I re-ran this backup twice, one time by setting up a new backup job and the results were identical, all backups stopped with 4 seconds left to complete and gave the same 3 messages as shown above.

=========================

At this point I went to the Control Panel add/delete Programs function and un-installed Ghost.

During the re-install of Ghost I got the following error message.

=========================

Failed to have success running Install VSSProvider function in MSI Install VSSProvider Function.

- -

The installation stopped and displayed a message to try again later. I tried again several times with the same result.

=========================

The next day, I un-installed Norton Ghost 15 and Norton 360 and ran the Norton uninstall utility to completely remove all Norton products (I downloaded the latest version of the uninstaller).

When I re-installed Ghost I got an error about the VSS Provider Function, but the program installation continued, even asking me to enter the key, which I did.

At the end of the installation, I got the following error:

=========================

System.Runtime.InteropServices.ComException (0x8000000A) at VProAuto.Protection Auto Class.get_Computer Policy Level (Boolean Include FFP.Object and Volumes.Object and Policies) at Symantec.VPro.VPro VI.VPro Connection. Computer Policy Refresh ().

=========================

I restarted the Computer and after the restart it looked like Norton Ghost was running and I opened it up and set up a backup and the backup ran and looked like it was working fine, until it got to the last 4 seconds, when it stopped and gave the same 3 messages that I received as explained at the top of this post

.

When I use Windows File Manager , it still looks like the backup created a backup file and this time I used the Ghost Backup explore tool to view the files in the backup and it looks like the files are inside of the backup, but given all the errors I can't be sure.

So now I'm back to where I started earlier, and I need to know what I should try next.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My backup are going to a second internal hard drive that I have in the system.  All of my programs, data, etc are on my Drive C: and I have a second internal hard drive set up for backups.   I have the second drive partitioned into 2 separate logical drives with the backups going to the partition labeled as drive K:

My drive C: is on a 1.5 Tb drive and the second drive is a 2.0 Tb drive.  The backups go to the K: partition of the second drive which is about 1.6 Tb in size.  The rest of the second drive is used for misc file storage.

I forgot to add that I'm using the Backup my computer to do a Full backup.

One other thing to add the backup is on Drive C: only.  I do not back up the second internal hard drive.

I'm glad you are doing this the way you said. After you ran the removal tool, what did you install first? Ghost or 360? I would try to install Ghost first. I'm wondering if 360 is interfering with the VSS driver installation. Is it possible to stop 360 during Ghost installation?

I installed Ghost first and did not re-install 360 untill I had done everything possible to get Ghost working completely.  After I got to the point that Ghost was getting to the end of a backup (4 seconds left) and then gave the same 3 messages that first gave me problems, only then did I reinstall 360 and that's when I decided to post everything I did and get expert help.

It might be worth uninstalling Ghost.  Shut the PC down completely (not restart). Do a cold boot. Then install. It may be worth doing a selective startup from msconfig to minimize things from interfering with the install.

I did a clean install as you suggested and the result was the same.

Then I loaded a program called Registry Clean Expert and ran a scan and repair on the registry.  I did this as a part of loading my old programs to this new computer.  Several other programs were loaded, but this is the only one that actually made any updates to my computer.

After the registry can and repair I opened Ghost and ran the backup job that has been running and stopping with 4 seconds left and giving me the messages previously reported.  This time the backup completed successfully!  After that, I created a new backup which included incremental backup every night and that one also completed successfully, and has now completed 2 incremental backups for the last two nights, also successful.

I'm not sure what the original problem was, but it is fixed now and everything is working fine.
