Norton Ghost 15 - Installation Problem - Failed to have success running InstallDriver function

Sorry for the long title - I requested help from Symantec - they gave me a suggested solution that did not work.

While attempting to install Norton Ghost 15 from CD, I get the following messages:

ERROR: Failed to have success running InstallDriver function in MSIInstallDriver Function.

&

ERROR: Failed to have success running UninstallDriver function in MSIUninstallDriver Function.

The software is being loaded onto a HP M9515Y PC with 8gig of ram.  I have 483gb free space on my hard drive.  I am running Vista Premium 64-bit.  The Windows program is up to date.  In addition, when I attempted to install from the web, I got the same two errors.

Norton support gave me a possible solution that did not work - http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=c1641c16-3899-41c7-96eb-2e76f8c1731a&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20090522144358EN

I am looking for the wisdom and problem solving Norton Community to help me find a solution.  Thanks in advance for all who take the time to read this and to all who give me an idea on how to solve my dilema.

Abe

Additional notes:

All defensive programs and anything else that could be disabled for the install were disabled.

Tom and Abe,

Look in the temp folder for a ngh install log file.  Once there, look for "return value 3" in the log.  Copy that and the preceding 10-20 lines into a response.

I am unable to find the ngh install log file - can you give me an example of the exact name (i.e. nghlog.tmp) - I looked in the Windows\Temp folder and was unable to find anything.  Since I am unable to even get a partial install, it is possible that the log is not being created.  Thanks for getting back with me.

Abe

If you can find it (nghostinstall.log or nghinstall.log) then it's been cleaned up.  To recreate, you'll have to uninstall and reinstall (check the temp folder right after install).

The Filename is: NGhostInstall and it was a hidden file.  Also I hopefully found what you asked for stated as: Its value is '3'.  I am unable to attach the entire file because it is too large.  I converted it to a PDF but this forum does not allow me to attache it.  If you need it, please email me and I will email it to you.

Thank you so much for your help!

Abe

Almost.  I'll use one line from your example (make sure you don't have word wrap enabled as it blends everything together).  The following is a single MSI note:

MSI (c) (78:48) [18:31:57:143]: NOTE: custom action RTCSetInstallType unexpectedly closed the hInstall handle (type MSIHANDLE) provided to it. The custom action should be fixed to not close that handle. Action ended 18:31:57: RTCSetInstallType. Return value 1.

The begining part notes that this is from an MSI script, handle, date time, etc.  The "Note:" item tells you that a custom action ran and it's details.  At the end is a return value.  1 means success. You can have success, skipped, and failed.  What's needed is to search for "return value 3", highlight that line as well as the preceding 10-20 lines and past that (all with word wrap unchecked if you're using notepad).  Getting the log from you would be more difficult than copy/paste due to the size of the file.

What's the file size of the PDF you created?  Do you have a place you can post online?

The file is less than 1meg - 961kb - you should be able to retrieve it at the following address:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1774566/NGhostInstall%2015%20Log%20-%20Abe%20Azar.pdf

Let me know if you have success - Thanks.....

Abe

Unfortunately not enough information for me.  A remote session might be best, but unfortunately I don't have anything free today.  Please send me a private message with days and times (please denote time zone) this week that would work for you.  Also include your email address.  Thanks.

I am trying to install the trial version before purchasing and I'm having the same problem described here.  Did you ever come up with a solution?

Sean

Sean,

Unfortunately, no.  My Son-In-Law had a copy of Norton Ghost 14.0 that I was able to load.  I still want to use Ghost 15.0.  If you come up with a solution, please let me know.  I will do some more research in the new couple of weeks and if I learn anything new, I will post here.

Abe

Are you willing to do a remote session to troubleshoot?

I do have an opening today.  I didn't receive a message to my previous offer.

Yes, this coming Monday morning between 8AM and 11AM (eastern time).

Please confirm

I'm on the west coast unfortunately.  I'll send you a private message.

So, after working with Sean there are two paths in troubleshooting this error:

-Check the permissions on HKEY_LOCAL_MAHCINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\ to ensure that your user name is listed, that you have full control, and that you propogate to child keys if you have to add the user

-Turn off Norton Product Tamper Protection temporarily during the installatiion of Ghost

Hope this helps.

It worked!  Thanks for the help.

I am having the same problem, tried the steps listed to no luck. I am running W7 Pro 64.

Any help is appreciated.

Greg
