Norton Ghost 15 - Unable to recover backup files

I am unable to recover my files that were backed-up via Norton Ghost 15. I am using a Dell XPS 15 laptop with backed up files on an external HDD via USB 3.0 port. Error message is:

"Error E7D1: Unable to make directory ‘C:/Users/Ray/Favorites. Error E7D10026 Unable to get attributes for ‘C:/Users/Ray/Favorites’. Error 00000005: Access is denied"

Can anyone help?

Welcome,

A couple of questions.

Is the external drive connected and runninig when you boot the laptop?

Can you see the external drive when you open windows explorer?

What is the opereating system?

Sorry, really three questions

Keep us posted

Hi Dick,

I've made some headway. First I'll answer your questions and I apologise for what has turned out to be a lengthy response:

- Yes, the external drive was connected when laptop booted

- Yes, the external drive was visible on Windows Explorer

- Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium

I got into this situation following a C: drive failuire which I tried to overcome this by using the Ghost installation CD to recover everything to the C: drive. It wouldn't work and Norton 'phone support indicated that the recovery using that Ghost 15 installation CD wouldn't work on USB 3.0 ports and USB 3.0 drivers needed to be down loaded. I couldn't see how to achieve this so I went to Dell under extended warranty to see if they could help.

Dell said the HDD was "corrupted:" and they would replace it but couldn't guarantee they could recover/retain my data files and they may have to just provide the HDD set up as it was when I purchased the machine. I thought that was OK as I was happy to re-install my applications and hopefully get rid of "crap" that I had probably accumulated over the 2.5 years since original installation. Then just recover my data files using as I thought it was the just a matter of installing Ghost and going through the recovery procedure.

After installing Ghost I found I couldn't recover my data files and hence my request above. However, since my original post I have had some success by uninstalling Ghost and carefully re-installing it as per Norton documentation. Then I ran LiveUpdate which I DIDN'T do previously. Low and behold I can recover the files using Ghost. So I'm sort of OK but, I think I'll still have the problem if I ever try again to recover my whole system, programs, data, etc using the Ghost installation CD.

Do you have a comment on this seemingly inability to use the Ghost installation CD to recover everything?

If USB 3 is the problem, download the SSR 2013 SRD. You will have to create an account before you download...

The SSR 2013 SRD looks very similar to Ghost 15's, but is based on WinPE 4 (Windows 8) which is USB 3 compatible. This ts fully compatible with Ghost 15 image files.

BTW, you are using images (v2i, iv2i files), right? If you used File and Folder backup, there is a different way to recreate the catalog file so you can recover your files.

Thanks Guys. With Ghost 15 installed and updated I can now recover backed-up files and folders from the external HD via the USB 3.0 port. While I hope I don't experience another catastrophic C:/ drive failure I need to be better prepared than I was this time. To be prepared I think that I should now carefully create and test a custom Symantec Recovery Disk CD as detailed in the Norton Ghost 15 User Guide. This should, as said in the user guide, "ensure that the recovery environment runs properly on your computer".

Again, thanks for the comments and I'll let you know how it goes.
