Norton Ghost 15 won't recognize my C: drive

Hi all,

I have a Windows Vista Dell laptop with an external SATA drive, which for some reason is the only drive Ghost 15 recognizes whenever I try to choose to backup my computer.  It does not list my C: or D: drives.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on?  I'm using 32 bit Vista, for what it's worth.

Thanks!

jkj2000,

Could you run partinfo.exe from C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Utility. Partinfo.txt will be created in the same folder. Please post partinfo.txt as an attachment.

Have you fixed it?

Hi there,

The problem is still around, but I have attached partinfo.txt to this message, in the hope that it can help diagnose the problem. Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Thanks,

jkj2000,

Several people have posted with a similar issue. Ghost couldn't see the partitions. Most had partition overlap which when corrected allowed Ghost to work properly. You don't have partition overlap but your partinfo isn't normal. You have incorrect values for Calculated Head and Sect. Your C: drive isn't aligned on a cylinder or 2048 sector boundary. At either end.

Correcting your C: drive alignment "should" allow Ghost to work. Hopefully. However, I'd image the C: drive before correcting the alignment in case something goes wrong, Can you see your partitions from the Ghost CD?

Hello Brian,

Thank you for the help.  I'm a little confused however.  How can I re-align my C: drive alignment?  Through the BIOS?  I've never heard of that before and am not sure what it means.

Also, how can I go about seeing the partitions from the Ghost CD?  Do you want me to boot from it?

jkj2000,

Yes, boot from the Ghost CD and see if you can do a One Time Backup of your C: drive. If you can't see your partitions from the CD environment then this will be impossible. So if you can't create a Ghost backup image, download DriveImage XML (it is free) and create a backup image of your C: drive. Write the image to your external HD.

Once you have a backup of your C: drive we can talk you through aligning the partition.

Brian,

the "C" drive is a single partition 500GB drive set to cable select and Ghost 15 is on that drive. The backup drive is a 1TB USB drive connected through a hub.

Hope this helps

Your situation is a little different as you will need to slide your C: drive. That's why I suggested a backup as a slide carries a slight risk of data loss if there is loss of AC power during the slide.
