Norton Ghost Custom Recovery DVD causes damage to windows7 start-up files

I own a Samsung Laptop & Seagate 1TB USB External Hard Disk Drive.

Samsung 300E7A, Intel® Core™ i5-2450M Dual Core Processor, 17.3"
HD+ Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit, 4GB DDR3 RAM,
500GB HDD, DVD Rewriter, Integrated Graphics, Webcam, HDMI,
Bluetooth 3, NP300E7A-A05UK

I’m running windows 7 home premium 64bit version of windows.

I created a custom recovery dvd disk in Norton ghost 15.0

I’ve backed up my (C:\) hard disk 54.5GB & a hidden system drive (*:\) 24.5MB using the windows Ghost program.

The Norton Ghost image backup was 31.3 GB in size.

I loaded the disk into my dvd drive and restarted my computer.

Everything loaded fine and I could see my Norton image files.

I exited the ghost restore program without running any of the restore backups.

I restarted my laptop, it would not start-up, after resetting the laptop I was prompted  to run a windows recovery program.

The recovery software repaired my boot-up configuration?

I’ve repeated the above operation three times, each time I have had to run the Microsoft windows recovery software to repair my windows start-up.

• How do I prevent the damage to my windows start-up files when I use a Custom Norton Ghost Recovery DVD disk?

Why are my Microsoft windows image backups larger than the Norton image file backups?

Windows image backup: 38.8 GB (41,754,641,920 bytes)

Norton image backup: 31.3 GB (33,685,267,356 bytes)
