Norton ghost eating up CPU

I am running norton ghost ver 15.0.1.36526 on windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I find myself constantly fighting it because it takes all my CPU resources. All I asked is backup of my documents. There are no event thresholds, threatcon is disabled. Just a daily backup schedule (at midnight). Here is an example of what happened just now (09:00 am).

My PC is running 100% CPU. Status message says "Creating backup 5%"

The log says that the backup started 2:52am, elapsed 2:21:30 (??)

Cancelled current operation, progress jumped to 95%, and after a few more seconds reverted to 0%.

Status message says "Reading backup destination information". CPU dropped to 50%, still unacceptable.

Killing svchost process tree. CPU drops to 10% (normal). Here is a copy of the event info:

Error EBAB03F1: The operation was canceled by the user.
Info 6C8F1C4F: A file folder operation on drive My Documents Backup was cancelled by the user.
Details:
Source: Norton Ghost

If this continues, I will disable the software completely, and maybe even uninstall it altogether.
