Norton Ghost v 15.0 locked External Hard Drive

Hello All

Desktop - Dell Dimension 5150 running Windows XP SP3

I have just completed my very first backup (full backup of 'C' drive). This was done to a brand new Verbatim SmartDisk 500GB External Hard Drive. It completed in only 49 minutes (I was expecting a full day to be truthful), but the 'C' drive had only 72GB used. All went smoothly until I tried to safely eject the external drive. Then came a message that the external drive couldn't be ejected at this time, try again later. I came here, searched for, and found a posting from Dec 09 that dealt with the same problem. I took the first suggestion, "Just to ensure that Ghost is truly the source of the issue, please try the following. Type in services.msc from the Start menu run box. When the services window comes up, scroll down until you find the Norton Ghost service. Then in the left window pane click on Stop Service. See if Safe Removal for your external drive works then." That suggestion worked; I could safely eject the external drive.

Now, the little Norton Ghost icon on the System Tray is telling me that Ghost needs attention. I assume that is because 'service has been stopped'? Do I ignore the 'exclamation point' on Ghost, or do I have to restart the service?

Back in '09 there was a very lengthy discussion regarding this matter. Has another 'fix' been found in the interim? What do I do when I want to do another backup? Start the Service, then do the backup?

My plan is to do a 'Full Backup' the first Sunday of every month, with 'incrementals' the remainder Sundays. I know that today isn't the first Sunday of April yet, but 'tis better to be safe than sorry. I figure as long as I keep this fix in my notes, I can live with doing this step each and every time. But, is this advisable, is there a better way, am I damaging my external drive, am I damaging Norton Ghost? I'm not computer savvy, but I did disable a variety of automatic program updates, etc while the backup was running.

Thanks very much for any responses.
