Norton Ghost - "You don't have permission to open this file."

Hello

I just bought Ghost 15 so that I could backup partitions on my SSD which my older Ghost doesn't want to do.  I created a backup of the partition which went fine.  Now I'm attempting to restore.  I boot into Ghost from the CD and when I select my backup file that I created I get this message:

"

You don't have permission to open this file.

Contact the file owner or an administrater to obtain permission.

"

I'm booting into Ghost from the CD to make the backups and restores.  Why am I getting this message and how do I resolve the problem?

Many thanks for your help!

From Norton Chat: (still working on resolution)

Agent: Can I please confirm that the issue you have described is you are not able to restore the back up that you have created?
B_c_: Correct.  The backup was of a partition on an SSD and saved to a SATA II drive with all standard settings.  This was also done in the boot from CD envirnment.
Agent: Thank you for the information.
Agent: I am sorry that you are facing this issue. I will surely help look into the issue for you.
Agent: Your case number is xxxxxxxxx, please write this down.
Agent: Have you taken the back up from the Norton Ghost product or using the resovery disc?
B_c_: I created a recovery CD on 1 computer and then used that CD on computer 2 to create the backup... because I don't want Ghost installed on computer 2
Agent: I understand. Please connect the external hard drive to the computer which has Norton Ghost installed and try to open the image file that has been created on your hard drive.
B_c_: So does Ghost need to be installed on one of the drives to use the Ghost boot CD?  What if you just boot from the retail CD?
Agent: You can use the recovery CD to take back up your computer and you need not have Ghost installed to take a back up.
Agent: Just to verify that the image file is not corrupt, please check the image on your hard drive on the computer that has Norton Ghost installed.
B_c_: Okay, I'll have to try all this later today. So to be clear, do you have to have Ghost installed in Windows in order to boot from the CD and Restore a partition from a Backup?
Agent: No. You need not have Norton Ghost installed on your computer to take a back up from your CD and restore it.
Agent: I will fix a call back within 24 to 48 hours to check with the issue.

As suggested, plug the external drive in on the system that has Ghost installed.  Verify that you can open the file.

Then right click on the file and select properties.  Check the permissions set on the files, they need to be set to allow "anyone" full permissions or at least read and write.

Dave

So through Windows I went to the v2i file and right clicked / Properties / Security / Continue / and selected Adminitrators then OK.  Then again click Continue / Add / Type 'Everyone' / Check Names / and OK out of everything.

By booting into Ghost from CD, Ghost now recognizes the file and will Restore from it.

However, at the end of the restore I now get an error:

"

Error EBAB03EE: Operating System API 2,017 failed.

Error 000003F0: An attempt was made to refernce a token that does not exist.

"

Even after this error, the partition seems to have restored just fine.

Should I be concerned with these errors?

I'm sorry that I can't help with the error, but it's very unusual that you needed to change the ownership or permissions.

The Ghost recovery disk runs as an administrator account.  The file or the entire folder must be set so thet the permissions are only for a user.  I can't even remember how to set a folder "only for me".

But you really should try to reset the folder permissions and make sure it's in a location normally accessed by everyone.

(not in a user/documents folder or any other normally restricted place).

est of luck,

Dave
