Norton Halt has me re setup again and again

Okay well as of today I'm going to write down dates and times that I'm having to re setup the USSD Expoitation from Norton Halt.

I guess the purpose of this thread is to find out if this is a common issue?  I mean I can download the app; scan 2/3 options and set up the USSD Exploitation but then its days/weeks later I get a notification on my cellphone saying "Re Setup is required"

Why??!!!!

Hi ltolman.

As you can see from this forum, this does not appear to be a common problem.  Sorry it is troubling you.  :-(

In cases where an app seems a little unreliable it is often recommended that you uninstall and then reinstall.  Have you tried that?

You say " I can download the app; scan 2/3 options and set up the USSD Exploitation" what do you mean by "scan 2/3 options"?  I would have expected you to say - I can download, install and set up the app. - or similar.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

After downloading the app I launch it

I do a scan for Master Key Exploit (Option 1)

I then do a scan for Hidden Device Adminstrator Exploit (Option 2/3)

Then I set up the USSD Exploit.  I choose Setup then choose HALT (not phone) set it to Always but like I said; after a while (days/weeks) I will geta notification at the top of my cell phone (where texts/missed calls come) and there will be a Norton Halt Icon...I pull down and it says "Re Setup is Required"

So of course I launch the app and either I do another scan and then re set up USSD Exploitation and set HALT to Always

As far as un installing and re installing. I believe I have done that

Thanks for the helpful response Itolman.

It is some time since I installed Halt and I had forgotten about the scan options.

Normally if I run Halt then at the bottom (under USSD Exploit) there is a box with "Turn off protection".  Does it say that on yours?  Or does it say "Set up"?  I note that if I force mine to "Turn off protection" and then go back to "Set up" I do not get asked a second time if I want it to do this Always - which seems odd.  Assuming that when you check you get "Turn off protection" why not try selecting that, and then go back in with "Set up" and see what it ask you this time.

Just to check - I am running version 5.0.0.105.  Is that the same as yours?

Okay you are saying you setup your USSD Exploitation then disable and re setup?

Do you do it immediately or do you wait like 5min, 1 day or 1 week or whatever?

Yes my version is up to date. (I do have your version number)

No I have not ever disabled it and chose to re set it up.  I have just downloaded it, ran the scans and set up USSD and it does say "turn protection off" but I leave it and X amount of days later it re pops up saying "Re Run Setup Please"

Hello again Itolman.

I am sorry if I confused you.  I was not saying that I set up my USSD and then disabled it, I was saying that I could, and reporting what I saw when I did that.  I was trying to check that you could do the same and were seeing the same.  Which it sort of seems that you are.  I was also wondering if, when you looked at the app, it was in any way showing that it was disabled before the warning message came up, which without evidence to the contrary, must assume it does not do.

So it appears that I am stumped.  My best guess was to stop the app, clear the data and uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall but it appears that you have pretty much tried this.

I will try and ensure that this issue is drawn to the attention of the development team and see if they have any ideas.

If anyone else has any ideas please feel free to jump in and help....

Hi Itolman,

I went ahead and forwarded the issue to the development team for further investigation.

Well it makes me wonder if theres another underlining issue causing it ya know.

HYPOTHETICALLY speaking......what if its because I erased my Internet Cache ya know?

Just some random thing.

I mean we all want to be protected from intruders and such.

I may not know the primary purpose of this USSD Exploitation but perhaps like I said something is triggering it to cause a "re setup"

Anyways so yes, I will try on a Daily Basis launch Norton Halt and see about the message.  Like you said.........for instance what if it says "Set Up" but its like 4 days afterwards does it notify me?

Right now it does say "Turn off Protection" so I do have the ability to turn it off but again; I'm wondering what the underlining issue is.

Maybe some update to some other program I have running?

And if I do see at 5pm on Wednesday it says "Set Me Up" whereas Tuesday at 5pm it says "Turn Off" I will try really hard to remember what I did to my device (such as updating/clearing caches/force stopping certain apps) within the last 24hrs and notify

I will keep this thread open. Hopefully you can chime back if you find anything and like I said. I will try and remember daily to check around 5pm (set schedule) and see what I come up with.

Thanks

Good luck.

Any future posts to this thread will bring it back to the top....

Hi Itolman, after investigation, I found 4 scenario could make your issue:

  1. User manual click “clear defaults” button in App info UI of Norton Halt, and reboot device.
  2. Other App want become the default caller, once found Halt is the default caller, it will pop up the Caller Choose UI, user select another application as default Caller, then user reboot device.
  3. The device of user have someone OEM application with admin permission is default caller, once found the default caller not itself after Halt set it, it will set itself as default caller again, then user reboot device.
  4. The device of user was rooted, someone application with admin permission is default caller, don’t allow Halt as the default caller ; or someone other security application with admin permission think Halt is a malware(change the default caller), then cancel the caller change of Halt. user reboot device.

base your said, seem the reason more likely 3 and 4, so could you please provide detail info about your device? such as branding, model number, android version, what application installed except Halt? were your device rooted? Is there any other application could change the default caller ? thanks!

Okay I honestly dont understand what you mean by "Rooted"

My interpretation of what rooted means....is that I installed another Operating System on it....that answer is a NO.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S4...aside from taking the phone out the box...performing a Factory Restore/Reset...and going into Recovery Mode to perform an additional Factory Wipe/Restore/Reset and even Application Clearing..I havent done anything else to my device.

Now....what do you mean "another application change default caller"

What I will say is this....I think I was browsing the internet or I was using my note pad and within either of those two I clicked a set of numbers (like a phone #) and it attempted to bring up the menu for Norton Halt.  It gave me a prompt to select Norton Halt or it gave me the option to select Phone

At that moment when I saw that message pop up I chose "Cancel" I decided whatever I was doing I didnt want to go thru with it right now, that or I used my home phone as means of making a call.

Anyways what I will say...and what I was about to disclose tonight anyways was that this happened 1-3 days ago.

Earlier today I could have sworn I looked at Norton Halt and it didnt need to be setup again.  After I saw that prompt for the above mentioned I immediately looked at Norton Halt and it still said Protected...after 2-3 more times of checking I was completely fine.

So on Friday October 11th at 4:37pm PST I Set Up Norton Halt...bam I'm protected

On Wednesdsay October 23rd around 1:54pm PST I saw a message saying I need to run Set Up again.

Have I? Not yet but I will edit this when I have completely set it up.

So my theory again on this?  When I received that dialog prompt on my cell phone and I had to choose between "Norton Halt" or "Phone"...perhaps thats the trigger....and then apparently whatever you choose...a day or 3 later it disconnects and I have to run Set Up all over??????

*****EDIT; On this day 10-23-13; I cleared cache, cleared data, un installed and re downloaded Norton Halt off Google Play...I scanned my cell phone with both options then at 3:50pm PST I am protected**************

Hi Itolman:

I do many test in my company's Samsung Galaxy S4, but can't reproduce your issue. Could you tell me what aplication installed on your device?

LOL reproducing??

Thats just it. As I've mentioned it takes DAYS AND DAYS before Norton Halt has me re set up.

I believe theres no way this can be reproduced without waiting the duration.

I mentioned the first time I installed it.

I mentioned the 2nd time I had to re setup

I think we need to wait another time to see if the # days can be replicated ya know?

It took what.....11 to 17 days before I had to re setup?  Plus not to mention of what i already said.....I got a dialog box that appeared that had me choose "HALT" or "Phone" perhaps whenever that message box appears...perhaps thats when the app will shut down?

Okay; good news and bad news.

First the bad news.......I had to run Set Up just a few minutes ago

The good news.........So I think I have narrowed it down to 3 things that could have happened

Installation of either of 2 applications or making 1 phone call..........HEY thats all I have done....and over the next 3 days I'm gonna see if I can replicate it myself. Feel free if you want but I'm doing it either way.

Okay so the latest application I installed is called

Quixey (App Search &)...........and here are the permissions:

*Storage: Modify or delete contents of your USB storage
*Phone Calls: Read Phone Status and Identity

*Network Communication: Full Network Access

*System Tools: Test Access to protected storage

*Network Communication: View WiFi Connections, view network connections

*Affects Battery-Control Vibration

*Your Accounts- Find Accouns on the device

Other application which I believe to be the culprit is called

Contacts + (its by the Contacts Plus Team) Weighs 9.5MB....and the permissions:

*Your Messages (edit your text messages (sms or mms), read your text messages (sms or mms), receive text messages (mms), receive text messages (sms), send sms messages)

*Storage (disable your screen lock, modify or delete the contents of your usb storage)

*Other Application UI (draw over other apps)

*System Tools (read battery statistics)

*Your accounts (add or remove accounts, create accounts and set passwords)

*Phone Calls (directly call phone numbers, read phone status and identity)

*Network communication (full network access)

*Your Social Information (modify your contacts, read call log, read your contacts, write call log)

*Sync Settings (read sync settings, toggle sync on or off)

*System Tools (install shortcuts, test access to protected storage)

*Affects Battery (control vibration, prevent phone from sleeping)

*Your application information (run at start up)

*Network Communication (change network connectivity, receive data from internet, view wi fi connections, view network connections)

*Your Accounts (Find accounts on the device, read google service configuration)

Okay but heres the thing (s)

#1  At around 11am PST I installed Contacts + .....I messed around with the application but within 10minutes I went into Application Manager I cleared Cache, Cleared Data, Forced Stop and Un installed (just like I do with all apps I need to un install)

#2 At around 1:45pm PST I installed Quixey (currently.....still installed)

#3 At 2:55pm PST I made a phone call to an 800#

#4 At around 4:20pm PST I noticed I needed to re setup Norton Halt

So there still is a delay....as far as which app......well like I said...over the next few days I'm gonna test it out.  I will let you know what I find out.

But honestly I think it has something to do with the:

Contacts + app and the main permission of *Phone Calls (directly call phone numbers, read phone status and identity)  and the infamous phrase directly call phone numbers

Itolman

I might be suspicious of the Quizey app. The setting for Storage:Modify or delete contents of your usb storage could be deleting the information from the Halt app.

See if there is another option for that setting in Quizey.

Well...............back to the drawing board........

On Saturday around 10am I downloaded and installed "Contacts + " I did what I did on Friday and un installed within 10minutes.

Nothing happened on Saturday

On Sunday around 10am I downloaded and installed Quixey and ran a couple searches...just to make sure the thing was launched....by evening I've had no issues.

Also on Sunday I even called the same phone # as I did beforehand....and again no issues.

My HALT is still active so I think we need to explore something else.

Also who knows if I do have other programs that use that phrase "modify contents of USB Storage"; I mean what If I have 10 programs?

You see even after a clean restore...factory wipe....i download 30-50 apps.  I currently have 20 apps per page and 5 pages.....so I have a total of 100, correction 101 Apps on my Samsung Galaxy S4

So any other ideas that might help with troubleshooting this??? Thanks

You do not mention your original problem with Halt returning, yet.

With that many apps, and the time involved before Halt acts up, this could be a nightmare to troubleshoot. Start by uninstalling any apps that you can live without for a couple of weeks, and see if you still have problems.

Hi ltolman,

I think the "Contacts +" maybe is the root cause. after my test, I found the "Contacts +" will try to change the default caller after you make a call in "Contacts +", step as follow:

1. install "Contacts +"

2. make a call in "Contacts +"

3. after the call, "Contacts +" will pop up a dialog to prompt user select the default caller from a application list, but the list don't contain our Halt.

4. if user set any application of the list as default caller, the halt will pop up the notification to require user re-setup settings when halt restart.

maybe you do same thing.

4. if user set any application of the list as default caller, the halt will pop up the notification to require user re-setup settings when halt restart

Okay that might make sense.  You see when you set up Norton Halt to begin with you get that dialog box that basically asks you to select "Halt" for all future stuff.

So at one time whenever I was browsing the internet and saw a number to call, I got a message that appeared "Halt" or "Phone" even though I cancelled the action and just dialed it naturally its a possibility Norton Halts settings got corrupted.

I need to see if I can replicate that dialog box again and see if Norton Halt asks me to re setup.  Then I'll continue to monitor and see if thats the cause.

I'll be back in a couple days to tell you whether or not I can make that dialog box re appear.  (but might look at forums for any replies)

Well darn it all!!!

I've gotten the dialog box to appear a couple times, even when I was presented with HALT or PHONE; I decided to select Phone and nothing is happening....meaning its not telling me to re run setup.

I think its just a matter of time for it to re appear
