Norton Icon on desktop

I suddenly have two Norton icons appearing on my desktop. Can I get rid of one without disabling or removing Norton. If so, how?

I would right mouse click on each and check Properties to see if they are shortcuts and if so where do they go. If they are shortcuts you can always delete if you don't want them and the links should still be in the Programs menu structure.

But one of them might relate to downloading your copy of Norton to install it and could be a shortcut to their location or could be an actual file, depending on how this happened.

I would not recommend ever deleting anything anywhere unless you actually know exactly what it is and what it does so thanks for asking!

Hi NORCOL,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Which Norton product do you have and the exact version from Help > About? Also what OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks

Allen

Thanks for the reply.

I have Norton \INternet Security Version 17.8.0.5  and Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.   SP?

Hello NORCOL

What probably happened was when your NIS 2010 updated to the new version, it probably also created a new icon for the program. Click on the properties and check what the patch of each icon is. One is probably pointing to the newer version number and the other one is probably pointing to the previous version number.

Hi NORCOL,

Thanks for the response. Can you clarify something? I should have asked this earlier.

Are you indicating that there are two NIS icons on your desktop or in your task tray?

If there are indeed two of them on your desktop, then as others have said one is probably pointing to an outdated location. If there are two in your task tray that is a different story, so please let us know.

Also you have NIS 2010 and are entitled to NIS 2011 for free if your subscription is current. You can visit http://updatecenter.norton.com/ to upgrade to NIS 2011.

As a precaution you can back up your Identity Safe by following the procedure here. And save your Norton product key which is available in your Norton Account.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

There are two icons in my task tray at the bottom of my screen.   I stil have only one larger Norton Icon in my desktop.  Thanks for asking. I should have more clear.

Hello NORCOL

Do both icons in the task tray on the bottom open up Norton's correctly and to the correct version?

Norcol --

It's not uncommon with WIndows 7 to get two icons on the system tray but there is also an icon there from Windows itself which when you click on it shows all the icons for different functions and you can select for each of them whether the icon shows all the time; only if there is a problem or never so you may want to select one of those for the icon that does not open the actual NIS screen

If you look on the image below -- you may have to enlarge it with the zoom function of your browser -- you will see the two Norotn Icons in the screen list and down on the system tray alongside the Norton Icon there is my mouse pointer pointing to the arrowhed ^ icon that puts up a small screen with one or more icons on it (hidden ones but on the system tray) and Customize  so click on that and the screen comes up and you can select -- as you can see for one I have it set:

Show icon and notifications

and for the other

Show notifications.capture_26092010_182008.jpg

I hope that helps.

When I first read your message I thought you meant two shortcut icons on the desktop ....

Thanks for all that. However, when I click on either of the tray icons I don't know what version they point to. They both open the same NIS report page and I can't find anywhere on it to get the version.

I also don't have the arrow head your screen capture shows, so I'm afraid I.m no farther ahead.

NORCOL

Can you do a screen capture (use the prtscrn and paste the image into MS paint. Save it and upload the image to the forums using the  button in the toolbar above the editing view).  You can blank out/crop anythink you don't want us to see.

Hi NORCOL,

Right click on each of the icons in turn and select Open Internet Security or you can also just double click on the icon in the task tray and it will do the same thing. Then click on Help & Support > About and it will show the full version. When you bring up NIS from either of the two icons both should bring up the same NIS interface and have the same version. I suspect they do both bring up the same thing.

You are not seeing the arrow because you apparently don't have too many icons so everything is visible already. The arrow just that more icons are hidden out of view.

But if you right click on any empty spot in the task bar you should have an option to Customize notification icons. Select this and the rest should be the same as Hugh described.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Is this hotfix somewhat related? http://www5.nohold.net/Symantec/ukp.aspx?pid=1&vw=1&solutionid=1542

Hi Tywin7,

No that hotfix should not be related. First it addressed a problem where the icon was missing, where here there are two icons. Secondly as indicated in the following post this hotfix was already included in the NIS 17.6 update sometime back.

Norcol,

I don't know what to suggest then.

Ooops -- I see Allen has said what to do .......

Suddenly today, one of the Norton Tray icons was gone, just as suddelny and mysteriously as when it showed up.

Don't have a clue why or how, but the problem (apparently) no logner exists.

Thanks for all your  input anyway.
