Norton Icon Shortcut On Desktop After I Delete-Daily

I have a relatively simple question. Has there been a change since the last update for Norton 360 that constantly places the program shortcut on your desktop daily and is there a way to eliminate this from happening? Its not a major problem but I do like to have control over my desktop and having to delete this shortcut every day makes no sense. Is this new? I know in prior months/years after a major update, it does place the shortcut back on your desktop but this is back on my desktop every day no matter what. Thanks-

Its not a major issue I just have never had a program that does this. Almost every program I know of places their program shortcut after a major new release or update. This, I am seeing daily since last week. Its got to be a minor bug.

What is odd, it is happening on all 3 of my machines. This is the response I got below. I will just keep deleting the shortcut. Check for the Latest Version (Manual Upgrade if Needed):

  • If the issue persists, it’s possible your Norton app hasn’t fully migrated to the latest version. While automatic updates are common, you can manually upgrade.

  • You can download the new Norton app experience directly from our website.

  • Alternatively, you can use the Norton Upgrade tool if your app hasn’t updated automatically.

@JJGolf5343 Have a look at this setting in Windows settings:

Disable “Allow themes to change desktop icons” in Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings .

I initially thought the issue was caused by my backup application (which I’ll keep nameless, as it also functions as a security app alongside its backup feature). It primarily serves as my backup solution since Norton no longer offers that option. After uninstalling the app and restarting, the Norton shortcut reappeared.

As a side note, it would be great if Norton considered reintroducing a local backup solution. In the meantime, I’ll just continue deleting the shortcut, as I’ve also unchecked the icon option under the theme settings, as suggested.

The local backups were restored some time ago now.

What I actually meant was the option for a full PC backup option that includes local files and folders, allowing for a complete system backup and restore. I only stated that as to why I would allow for two security suites installed on one machine.

Were you thinking of Norton Ghost? That left sometime around 2013.

Yes, I did use the Ghost application, and that was actually when I started using Norton. On reflection, though, Ghost wasn’t part of the security system—it was a separate app. The application I use now combines full PC backup and security, which is what I should have mentioned in my original feedback.

Regarding the Norton shortcut concern, it is a bit unusual, but I haven’t noticed widespread complaints about it. It seems likely that something in my personal settings is causing Norton to recreate the shortcut. It’s not a major issue, but I wanted to flag it in case it’s a small bug. I also suspect I notice it more because I shut down my PC daily—users who rarely shut down might not see the shortcut reappear. I can close out my concern here-no worry.

Hope you have a great week, be safe all.
