Norton ID Safe missing with Firefox 6 even after multiple Firefox/Norton removal/reinstalls

Hi joebike2:

This is just a suggestion, but instead of rollling back to NIS 2010 you could download the NIS 2011 v. 18.6.0.29 installer here and then install NIS 2011 using PapauZ's instructions here.  That way LiveUpdate should deliver the patch for the FF6-compatible Norton extensions.

If you decide to go this route, you should turn off automatic download of new versions after NIS 2011 is installed (Settings | Miscellaneous Settings | Automatic Download of New Version) to make sure that NIS 2011 doesn't try to download the new NIS 2012 upgrade.  You could always upgrade to NIS 2012 later when they've worked out the initial bugs from Support | New Version Check from the NIS 2011 menu.

Hi Imacr

Well this is frustrating ... I took your suggestions and removed NIS and then downloaded NIS 2011 ... ran liveupdate 3 times, rebooting each time.  My Liveupdate history now looks similar to yours with product updates listed as successful ... but guess what still no Norton Toolbar ... at this point I'm tired of d***ing around ... I'll just use it as it is ... maybe some of the issue is Windows 7 32bit vs. 64bit since I've noted some comments to that end.  Or maybe it's deep in Firefox ... even though it's been reloaded numerous times ... just academic at this point ... thanks again for your persistence.

Hi joebike2:

I'm happy to take one more crack at this.  If I can't help there are lots of people in this forum with far more tech expertise than myself that can straighten this out.

I assume you're still missing the FF6-compatible Norton Toolbar v. 2011.7.1.3 and Symantec IPS v. 3.1 extensions.  If not, post back with another screen shot.

Firefox 6 Norton Extensions.jpg

If you've now performed a clean re-install of NIS 2011 v. 18.6.0.29 (released May 2011) as described in PapauZ's post here, it's possible the NIS Product Update listed in your NIS security history as described in message # 19 could actually be the older FF5-compatible extensions (released June 2011) rather than the new FF6-compatible extensions (released Aug 2011).  It's hard to tell when all you see in the security history is the generic NIS Product Update notification.

Since you already exited and re-started Firefox 6.x a few times to allow the extensions.sqlite file time to register the Norton extensions, here are a few more things you can check:

Is the clock in your system tray set to the correct date and time?  An incorrect clock can affect the delivery of LiveUpdates.

Do you have other security software (e.g., AVG Free, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, etc.) running in real-time protectioin mode that could interfere with the installation of NIS or running of LiveUpdate?

After you activated (registered) your NIS 2011 with your product activation key, does an online subscription check (Support | Subscription Status) report that your subscription is valid and that you have the correct number of days remaining on your subscription?  Is your subscription status also correct when you view the main NIS window?

NIS Subscription Status.jpg

If you run an online One Click Support session (Support | Get Support), does the utility detect any obvious problems with your installation?  Important Note: One Click Support will likely ask you if you would like to upgrade to NIS 2012 - just decline the NIS 2012 upgrade and let the support session run to completion.

Does a manual full system scan of your hard drive(s) (Scan Now | Full Scan) detect any problems other than tracking cookies?

Finally, does LiveUpdate run automatically when you leave your system in idle mode for extended periods of time.  You can check the Last Run time and Status of your last Automatic LiveUpdate in the Norton Tasks window (Performance | Norton Tasks).  My screenshot below isn't the greatest example since I have Automatic LiveUpdate, Insight Optimizer defrags and Norton Community Watch disabled in my configuration settings.

Chin up!  This too shall pass.  :smileytongue:

And assuming your Norton extensions are still working in IE, it might be a good idea to use your IE browser for a few days until you can get this problem resolved.

Hi joebike2:

One other obvious thing I should have asked you.  If the FF6-compatible extensions were delivered via LiveUpdate then the file C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\18.6.0.29\coFFPlgn.dll should be version 2011.7.3.1.

If you have the v. 2011.7.3.1 of the coFFPlgn.dll, this would suggest that your Firefox installation, and not NIS 2011, is likely the problem.

Same issue -- Norton INternet Security 2012 (19.1.0.28) Firefox 6.0.2) -

Safeweb not working

Identify safe appears to work but toolbar pulldown indicates the product is inactive.

Running Windows 7, 64-bit.

Everything runs fine under IE9.

Everything was woking fine up until I upgraded to NIS 2012.

Hope there is a solution in the near future.

With the popularity of FIrefox, you would think norton woudl debug their updates and new versions to run seemlessly under Firefox.  There generally appears no issue, or fewer issues, with IE9.  I would say money talks.

Good Luck!

Hello again Umai

Norton toolbar works fine in IE 8

Attached is sceenshot of Firefox Extensions ... only extension is Microsoft.NET Framework Assistant

Hi jbean,

Sorry for the delayed response. Was not able to access my test machine during the weekend.

As I can see, the Norton Extensions are completelty missing in your Firefox. This could happen when your registry entries have got disturbed or if the Extensions.ini in your Firefox profile  file got corrupted.

In addition to Imacri's points, I will try to help in getting the Norton Extensions loaded to your Firefox Extensions tab. I have sent you a Private Message asking for some detailed information regarding this. Please have a look at it.

Thanks,

Umai

I'm not sure if you noticed, but if you're corresponding with joebike2 via PM please note that he tried rolling back to NIS 2011 over the weekend, so he may not currently be running NIS 2012.

Glad to see you back in the mix.

Hi imacri,

Thanks for letting me know. I noticed that he went back to NIS 2011, and have given instructions accordingly.

Thanks,

Umai

Hi Imacri ... as you've noted Umai has also jumped in to help via PM to which I've responded ... but I do wish to follow-up with answers to the questions you kindly posted ...

System clock is correctly set.

No other security software running

171 days remaining on my Norton Subscription

Full system scan is clean

Live update runs automatically

I'm actually rather positive on finding a solution since it seems that you and Umai are not going to let me rest until this is solved.  With your combined help I'll keep plugging along.  Steve

Hi lancen3:

You may want to subscribe to a new post here by randomname that looks very familiar - that is, Identiy Safe stopped working in Firefox 6.0.2 on a 64-bit Win 7 machine after upgrading to NIS 2012.  There's no solution posted yet but some useful info may eventually be added.

Hi Imacri ... quick note to let you know my problems are solved ... Umai noted that there were a couple of lines of code missing from my Firefox extensions.ini file ... adding those did the trick ... thanks for your assistance.

Posting the solution to this problem, so that other users may also get benefited.

In the Extensions.ini file present in this location,  %appdata%\ Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\SomeRandomeValue.default\extensions.ini file,

the following 2 entries should be present. If it is not present then, Norton toolbar will not be loaded in Firefox.

For NIS 2011,

Extension1=C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_18.6.0.29\\IPSFFPlgn

Extension2=C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_18.6.0.29\coFFPlgn_2011_7_1_3

For NIS 2012,

Extension1=C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_19.1.0.28\IPSFFPlgn

Extension2=C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_19.1.0.28\coFFPlgn

The numbers Extension1 and Extension2 will vary accordingly depending on the other addons present in your Firefox.

Thanks,

Umai

Hi Joebike2,

It is great to know that your problem got solved.

Thanks to you and imacri for your co-operation during this time.

Thanks,

Umai

joebike2:

This is great news.  Congrats to both you and Umai for persisting and finally figuring this out.

I've posted a link to Umai's solution in randomname's thread Idenity Safe Says Not Active In Firefox  here to give it more exposure.  I'm sure this will be a big help to other people having the same problem.

Just a hint for others following this thread who are trying to find the correct extensions.ini file in Firefox.  Go to Help | Troubleshooting Information and click the Open Containing Folder button as shown in message # 14 of this thread to browse to the correct location of your default FF profile.

Now the bad news.  I see FileHippo posted Firefox 7 Beta 6 yesterday, so the "stable" release of Firefox 7 must just be around the corner. Oh, joy. :smileyvery-happy:
