Norton Identity Protection for Chrome?

I am a long-time user of Norton Internet Security and have always used Internet Explorer.  However, I recenty switched to Chrome and NIS automatically installed the Norton Identity Protection extension.  Following the website link for the extension takes you to the Chrome Store where the description is as follows:

Norton Identity Safe is a password manager that makes logging into your favorite websites easier, faster, and more secure. It includes a browser toolbar with quick links to your passwords, along with other security tools. Changes in the latest version of Google Chrome require reinstalling the Norton toolbar to be able to use it in Chrome.

Note that installing this extension does not install Norton Identity Safe. If you want to use Norton Identity Safe, you need to install the Norton application that includes Norton Identity Safe and then install this extension.

So, since I am not going to use Norton Identity Safe, I am trying to figure out what this extension actually does.  It does not display safe website messages like in Internet Explorer, the icon never seems to change, and it has no options.  So what does it do?  And, do I need it?

Thanks!
