Hi,
my hard drive isn't new anymore but it has worked quite well and works still. Today I installed Norton Internet Security 2011 and got an unpleasant problem. When NIS does it's Insight check I can read lot of raw read errors / off track errors from SmartDisk software (Disc Checkup). Usually NIS does it when I'm not in computer but sometimes when I come back when it still does it, my computer freezes for a little while, then works fine again and then freezes again.
This is annoying because I hadn't any problems with NIS 2010 and the ammount of errors started to increase after installing the NIS 2011 update.
So, what should I do? Buy a new hard drive?
Hi and thanks for the help
If I do chkdsk /r in command prompt, is there a risk that my hard drive breaks up right away?

No, the /r switch locates the bad sectors and retrieves information from them. It shouldn't damage anything. It might take some time to run, though.
Your Norton update can't have caused this; it must have been an unfortunately timed coincidence. Unfortunately, though, it sounds as if your hard drive is breathing its last breaths. It might crash tomorrow or in a month, but once you start seeing signs like the ones you descibe, you'd better be prepared that it might happen at any point, so be sure to back up your important stuff.
I would recommend backing up before doing anything else. I might be one of the few to perform the coup de grace on a hard drive by running chkdsk. Mine was perhaps closer to its last gasp than yours, but it does pay to be careful.
Hi,
I did chkdsk for drives C and D. Windows and Norton are in C and that hadn't any problems. But drive D (my software is there) had five faulty files which chkdsk fixed. Now the computer is a little bit faster and quieter.
I also did the Insight check. Now it's faster and there wasn't any reading errors after it :)
But yes, it's sure that my hdd has little problems. I have backed up my own files to external hard drive. I think I use this until it starts to have serious problems.
Thanks for the help for all of you :)
HI ElGrande
Good to hear that your problem is under control. My advice to you would be to replace the drive before it "starts to have serious problems".
