Hi PieterV,

    I knew about the C.W..  :)

What sort things does "optimizing internal file structures" do?  What other tasks run at idle?  Do all/some of the tasks always run?  If not, what ones run at only idle?  Is this a new feature of have symantec decided to make this known to the user?  Are these the tasks that do not run when Silent Mode is On?

Does turning off the Idle Time Scan also Turn Off the Timeout feature?  Please confirm.  :)

I think these tasks may be slowing down my computer a bit as I did notice it ran a little bit slower than when I was using N.I.S. 2008.

These Tasks are not causing any problems.  :)

I was using "optimizing file structures" just as an example as one of several "things" that need to happen from time to time, or when certain trigger events occur. I am not going to go into details of what these "things" are, or what they do, it is part of the internal workings of the software.

In NIS 2008 they ran whenever they needed to, in NIS 2009 the Smart Scheduler runs them only when the system is idle.

The CPU Usage UI only displays the most prominent and most important of these tasks.

Turning "idle time scan" off only turns "idle time scan" off, it does not turn other idle time tasks off.

If you disable "Community Watch", "Idle Time Scan", "Automatic LiveUpdate", and "Pulse Updates", there should be no tasks running.

If however you run LU, then some tasks will automatically run, e.g. a Quick Scan after a def update.

Pieter

Btw, I notice you just edited your post after I already replied, changing saying no system impact, to making my system a bit slower, which is it :)

The latter.

I have Automatic LiveUpdate Off, have turned Idle Scan off in the Computer Settings, but N.I.S. 2009 still seems to do “Background Tasks”, which I suspect is an Idle Scan which I do not want to run; there is no option to turn off the time Idle Time in the Miscellaneous section. Can someone from symantec please confirm what it might be running and how I can turn this off.

The latter.

Ok, if you can elaborate with details, we'd be happy to help.

e.g. Web Page seem to take much longer to load up, windows seems to take longer to open, the computer seems to lag quite a bit; if I think/notice of any more, I will let you know.

Hi Floating_Red, there are several background tasks that are unrelated to LU or scans, e.g. Community Watch.

Even if you turn off all features, there are some tasks that must run to keep the software in shape, e.g. optimizing internal file structures, and these cannot be disabled, but they still run only at idle.

Are any of these tasks causing problems?

Pieter
