I am unable to download NIS 12 to my Samsung N-145 netbook. I have already successfully loaded it to my desktop and laptop, but when trying to load to the netbook the bar with the save icon on it does not appear. Has anyone had the same experience, I'd welcome your help.
Hi Hugh,
Thanks for your reply. I'm downloading from my account on the Norton website, having already purchased NIS 12. I bought a 3 computer package and loaded to my desktop and laptop without problem. When I try with the netbook I can get the page where I have to click 'download' but whereas on the other machines a dialogue box for the download appears, with the netbook nothing happens. Norton support gave me a couple on links to paste to my browser but its not interested. I bought the netbook almost a year ago and ran the trial version of Norton until it ran out, then downloaded NIS 11, which worked okay until I tried to upgrade a few days ago. I've since deleted all Norton programs but you may be right in that I need to run a clean up tool.
Peter.

OK --
If it's only ever had Norton on it then I'd check Windows Uninstall Programs just to make sure it does not list any bits of Norton (it shouldn't unless it's complete) and then download and run one of the two tools below.
The Norton Removal Tool cleans up a little more intensively so I would be inclined to use that and then download a copy of the file that will install the current version of NIS 2012 which you can then run to install without using a download manager, which is the way I prefer.
So here for reference is the Norton clean up tool and then the link for NIS 20121:
This link Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the older Symantec Norton Removal Tool.
New NIS 2012:
Click on this link -- www.norton.com/nis12 This will download a single file of around 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!
So to sum up, I'd recommend using the older Norton Removal Tool, run it a couple of times with a reboot inbetween and then download the NIS12 file, either onto your other PC and then transfer it or direct onto the netbook where you can find it.
Then Run it to install.
Please let us know how you get on or if you have any queries ....
Hi Hugh,
I tried to do as you suggested with the Norton Removal Tool but it just wouldn't download. The browser just flips open and then closes just as quickly which makes me wonder if the Windows or Samsung security settings are blocking it. I did email Samsung a few days ago and they suggested I check some of the internet options settings, and gave me a list of things to look at, but they were all as they should be. I'm waiting to hear from them again after contacting them earlier.
Pete.
If by "download" you mean get the file from the Internet source at Norton and run it, can you just download it on another computer, put it on a thumbdrive and transfer it to the netbook and then run it to install it on the netbook.
Here's a link to the actual NRT Download rather than the preliminaries:
When you started to download the Norton Removal Tool and got this window:
did you click on Save or on Run -- in my experience Save is best and after it is downloaded then you can move it to the netbook and run it.
Can you look in WIndows' Remove Programs in case it did already install but you don't see it?
See if any others have suggestions since I haven't run it for some time on my machines and it's been updated.
Hi Hugh,
I downloaded onto a memory stick as you suggested, and then ran it to clear all norton products which it did, but it hasn't helped, I still can't download NIS12 from my Norton account. Samsung have suggested turning off the windows firewall and pop-up block which I'd already tried without success. Do you think I'd be able to download it using a memory stick from another computer, I'm just worried I'll lose my last installation.
Peter.
Vega,
I thought I said not to try to download NIS from your MyNortonAccount but to use the link to download the one piece installation file; put it on the thumbdrive and run it either from the thumbdrive or after transferring it to somewhere on the netbook hard drive that you can find.

You refer to Samsung Firewall --- what security applications does your netbook have? NIS has it's won firewall so you need to clear out all security software including disabling firewalls if you are having problems .....
Please try this route. If it installs then you can activate it with the key from your MyNortonAccount ... or maybe just Support / Subscription Status will do it.
Hi Hugh,
Sorry, yes you did say that and I misread what you'd written. Anyway, I loaded it to a thumb drive and it installed no problem from there. Thank you very much for your help, it's most appreciated.
Regards,
Peter.
Delighted that worked for you ... no idea what the problem is with getting it from MyNortonAccount etc unless it is the download manager .... I've never liked those as intermediaries between me and the source.
