Hello Adriano,

Apparently, your computer is running slow and needs to be optimized. I suggest you look at this thread, read my post and other posts and try to speed your PC. If you have other questions feel free to ask!

Thanks for the response guys.

The computer and the software on it, other than the OS upgrades, is essentially the same as when I was running Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall as two seperate packages. Each successive upgrade of Norton through NIS2006, NIS2007 and NIS2008 seems to have offered less detailed control of the Norton functions and to have slowed things down further.

Although I have turned off Symantec Automatic Live Update, I regularly run it manually at least every other day. My startup items are cut down to a minimum and turning these few off makes little difference. I regularly muck out my hard drive and defrag as required and I normally run a full system scan with NIS once a week. I generally keep the machine optimised on a regular basis. At the same time I am not in the habit of installing add-ons, about all I run is Google Toolbar and a shell extension for windows explorer, both of which have been on the machine for ages. I like to keep very close track of exactly what is installed on my machine. The version of NIS is bang up to date as a Norton Tech pointed me in the direction of it only a few days ago.

The most frustrating part of the boot process is that Norton seems to be checking the software associated with each desktop icon before that icon is displayed (it doesn't happen with autoprotect turned off) and this seems to take a ridiculous amount of time. If I regularly run a scan and autoprotect is on all the time, then why is it necessary to go through this check process every time I boot the machine. Norton just used to check the boot and startup files.

With regard to the problem of windows explorer locking up on ejecting removable media this was happening both pre and post installation of XP SP3 and started occurring after a NIS update. I click on eject to force the file table update before removing the media and after that Windows Explorer refuses to respond or close. If I then use task manager to force a shutdown/re-boot the message that always appears says that ccSvcHst.exe is not responding.

Maye I'll have to live with the first problem but I could really do with solving the second one.

I'm not sure if Norton checks the programs related with desktop icons, but you can go to NIS Options - Exclusions, and exclude Desktop from auto-protect scanning, and even the program files folder if your want, to see the result.

The second problem is more serious. You can try to remove the shell extension for windows explorer and see if the problem still exists. It seems to be a conflict between NIS and other software installed on your PC.

Get rid of the Google Toolbar.  This seriously has an impact on your system and slows it down; I am writing from experience here.

I think you are going to have to live with the problem of wait a few minutes at system start-up, but that is not a big Issue.

I would also maybe not have anything in the Exclude Section and I would let Auto-Protect Scan all Files and Folders.

I would Update your Norton Product every few hours and do Full System Scan at least twice-a-week.

I had similar problems on an XP computer. It turned out that its Maxtor hard disk was on the verge of failing. If the LED indicating hard disk activity stays on continuously, I’d really look in that direction.

I run a 2.4GHz pentium 4 system with XP service pack 3 in 512Mb of RAM. I am having problems with slow boot of the machine only some of which have been resolved via live chat/e-mail. Being energy concious I turn off my PC when not in use but I am becoming very annoyed by the length of time that it takes to boot to a usable condition. I have traced much of the problem to NIS2008 but had a similar problem before with NIS2007 and XP service pack 2. Before you ask I removed NIS2007 with the Norton removal tool before installing SP3 and installed NIS2008 afterwards.

With NIS2008 disabled my PC boots to usable in 2 minutes 40 seconds. This time goes up with Autoprotect on but Norton Community Watch turned off to 5 minutes 30 seconds and Norton seems to be scanning the software associated with each icon before the icon is displayed on the screen. Turning on Community watch increases the boot time to 6 minutes 13 seconds and turning Symantec Live Update on increases it further to well over 8 minutes.

I know that I could switch on and do something else while it boots, but when I need something in a hurry this delay is frustrating. Despite having used Norton for some years it makes me feel like changing to something else.

The second problem occurs when removing/ejecting removable media within Windows Explorer (zip disks, CDs/DVDs and memory sticks). I have turned off "scan removable devices for boot viruses on insertion" but every time that I eject removable media Windows Explorer locks up and won't respond. Using Task Manager to re-boot the machine (frustrating delay again) gives a message that ccSvcHost.exe is not responding which leads me to believe that the problem is NIS related.

Any help with these would be much appreciated.

I find this too.  If you want to start-up your computer faster, why not Turn Auto-Protect Off before turning the computer off?  Just remember, if you are infected with any Internet Threat, then you risk leaving them un-Detected for longer than they should be.  If you do do this, remember to Turn Auto-Protect On before Connecting to the Internet.  Auto-Protect is doing it's job when it Scans each file before it loads up because it is Scanning for Viruses within these programs.

How do you know it is not an Internet Add-On, or another Program, that may be causing your C.D.s, e.t.c., to crash?  How do you know if is is an Add-On Program, or another Program, that may be causing your computer to start-up slowly?

With regard to the Second Issue: It might be an Internet Threat.  When was the last time you Updated N.I.S. and Ran a Full System Scan?

N.I.S. 2008 is very light on the system and has the fastest boot-up time than any other N.I.S. Product; I am sure future Products of N.I.S. will be even lighter on the system as well as adding New Features to better-protect you and your computer, as well as better-Detecting Internet Threats.
