Norton Internet Security 2008

Hello huwynger,

The 1 or 3 PC question was a side issue - it only arose as I noticed reference to it when checking my Norton Account to check exact details of what I had installed on new pc.

As regards your question:

"Norton Internet Security (3-User) Nov 5, 2009 View 3 PCs"  - Do you see something like that?

Yes - mine reads Norton Internet Security (3-User) Nov 14, 2010 View 3 PCs

To summarise: my original query related to advice about using Bitdefender online scan in conjunction with NIS 2008, seems problems with scan may be due to Bitdefender server problems. Helpful responses given to me and in course of that a suggestion to upgrade to NIS 2009. That then gave rise to establishing exact details of what I have and the DELL/OEM aspect means answer is not straight forward and requires reference to Symantec.

I am more than happy to wait and really grateful that Phil D is looking into for me. I am not a launch into it and regret type, prefering to the slow considered approach. I prefer to get advice from those that have the technical skills that I do not.

Regards

Good words there! Hence the reason I would like to get input from Symantec.

However it is still the weekend, so just a wee bit longer and I'm sure we'll get this confirmed for you one way or the other.

Stay tuned!

Nice to have you around …

Hello Anti-Vera,

Some recent information I received indicates that you should be able to update to NIS 2009 on your new Dell and also add it to your spare laptop.

There are few ways to update to NIS 2009, but a great number of people have been successful installing NIS 2009 right over top of NIS 2008 as the newer Norton Products are designed to do this.

I know you have the key saved in your Norton Account, but you may want to write it down in case it is needed.

1) You can download NIS 2009 here and then choose the "Save" option as opposed to "Run". Save the file to a convenient location that you will remember such as your Desktop or My Documents.

2) Once the file has downloaded, click on the icon and the process will begin. The first stage is that NIS 2008 will be automatically uninstalled. This may take quite some time, so please be patient and do not interrupt the process thinking that it has stopped.

3) During the process you should be prompted for a restart - please do so. Once the uninstall of NIS 2008 is complete, NIS 2009 will then install itself. This will be much quicker than the previous process. Your activation key should automatically be picked up, however if it is not, you will be given the opportunity to enter it. If there is any issue with the key recorded in your Norton Account, you should be able to use the key from the reinstall CD, but I would try the one from your Norton Account first.

4) I generally recommend that once NIS 2009 is installed, you perform a manual "Run Live Update" just to be sure you have the latest definitions.  Of course, the product will continue to gather live updates automatically.

Once last "housekeeping" item: After the successful NIS 2009 installation, go to Add-Remove Programs and look for Symantec Live Update and Live Update Notifier. If you are not using any other Norton products which depend upon these, you can safely uninstall them as they are not required for NIS 2009.

When installing on your spare laptop, if the laptop has a recent version of NIS, then follow the above procedure. If it has a different brand, the first step is to be sure any previous security programs are completely removed. If you have any questions about that, feel free to provide us with the name of the previous security software.

The rest of the NIS 2009 installation process will be similar to the above, however you will have to manually enter the same activation key as used above.

If you have any questions, you know where to come!

Hello Phil,

First may I congratulate you on the clear and concise instructions you provided.

I created a system restore point, did a full backup and said a little prayer before I started. I need not have worried; the process was faultless and went exactly as you said. It took about 15 minutes, prompted for a restart after uninstall of NIS 2008 and again after install of NIS 2009. Activation was automatic, no key code requested.

My subscription period has remained intact – expiry still shown as Nov 2010 in my account.

I did not do the “housekeeping” item and remove Symantec Live Update and Live Update Notifer as I have Norton Save & Restore 2 which appears to use this.

I have run a first full scan, took a while as I had left external drive attached, so it scanned that as well. No problems.

I will not install NIS 2009 on my spare laptop until the New Year when my brother is going to replace the failed hard drive for me (the reason for my new computer). That will mean a re-install windows etc. and everything else so there will be no security programs on it at that point. Will the file NIS09EN.exe that I downloaded for the above process still be valid to use at that time?

Look forward to hearing from you on that final point.

Thank you very, very much for all your time and help.

Hello Anti-Vera,

I am very glad that all went well with your NIS 2009 installation!

Good idea to create a restore point and maybe someday, you'll share that prayer with us!

As far as the laptop, yes the same NIS09EN.exe file can be used.

If you do not wish to download it again from the internet, you can save that file to a flash drive or CD, copy it to the laptop and then proceed with the installation which will be quite fast, since there is no previous Norton Product to uninstall (you might want to fasten your seatbelt!). You will be prompted toward the end of the installation to enter the activation key from your Norton Account.

Just in case a new "version" is published between now and the time your laptop is ready, check back here and we'll let you know.

Please stay in touch and let us know what you think of NIS 2009!

Best Wishes

Congratulations!

<< You will be prompted toward the end of the installation to enter the activation key from your Norton Account. >>

I just did an install on my laptop and all I had to do was to point it to my Norton Account and it picked up one of the "PCs" from my 3 PC KEY.

If not it is worth knowing about that keylog file that is automatically created and put somewhere on the hard drive -- anyone remember the name and location? Oh yes -- in Documents.

For future reference, you can find this product key in
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Symantec\Norton Internet Security_Key.txt

If you have had more than one installation with a different KEY on the PC I think it adds an additional _ before the word Key in the filename since I have two such files one with _ and one with __

With that you can copy/paste the key into the KEY box that comes up if it is needed.

Hello Phil,

Had not expected to be in touch quites so soon. I am having a problem with NIS 2009 so have raised a new issue in the forum.

Hi BlackKnightOfH8,

If you have currently installed Norton Internet Security 2008, please uninstall it using the Norton Removal tool and install Norton Internet Security 2009 free upgrade.

1. Go to your Norton Account using this LINK and get the Product Key. You may require this same Product Key for activating the Norton 2009 program.

2. Download the free upgrade(NIS 2009) using this LINK, do not install it now.

3. Download Norton Removal tool from this LINK and run it 2-3 times to make sure that the previous version has been uninstalled completely.

3. Install NIS 2009 and activate it using the Product Key from your Norton Account.

Let us know the results.

I’m currently using Norton Internet Security 2008 with Windows XP Home edition. My computer frequently restarts  saying that Windows has just recovered from a critical error caused by my anitvirus software. Are there any known issues that could be causing this? I don’t even have to be using my computer for this to happen and it’s happening multiple times a day. Is there anything wrong with my NIS or XP? A virus or trojan? I’d like to get this solved so this can stop happening.

Hallo
