Norton Internet Security 2009 blocking Thunderbird POP3 and SMTP connection

To the best of my knowledge, yes.

No longer have to disable email scanning to receive email.

Successfully ran Live Update and received latest anti-virus signatures.

Security history shows block of Proventia Desktop Agent (required when I access work via VPN)

Qbee37, I’m really glad to hear that your problem has been resolved! It’s not clear to me why the problem is gone either, but I’m glad that it’s gone. Do you still have four instances of ccSvcHst running or are you now down to two as expected?

Finally resolved my problem.  I had to bite the bullett and remove and reinstall.  The big thing to remember is to "Run The Removeal Tool Twice"!!!    Run once, reboot, and Run again!!

The reboot again before you start a new install.

Well, I suppose it sort of depends on what you mean by two:

I'm not certain how one would interpret this.

The capitalization of the image name doesn’t matter so you do still have four instances. Given that everything seems to be working, it’s probably best to take the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach but something still doesn’t seem right either. Normally, you should only have two instances of ccsvchst.exe but having pcAnywhere on the system might be the reason that you have four.

Uninstalled pcAnywhere, rebooted, checked Control Panel | Add/Remove to verify it was gone.

Same four ccSvcHst remain.

Suspect an earlier post suggesting NIS 2009 and NSW 2005 aren't playing well is the problem could be worth pursuing.

Will do some more uninstall / Norton Removal Tool in a day or two to try and determine a definitive answer.

Stupid bullet almost took my head off:smileysurprised:

OK, finally sat down and decided to go the full route and use Norton Removal Tool.  Many thanks to mijcar for his detailed instructions (message 17  in this thread) for making sure all vestiges of any Symantec\Norton applications were gone.  Doing the final search for Norton/Symantec folders revealed what a mess had been made by various products over the years.  Tons of NAV, NIS, and NSW droppings!

Now, while taking the blame for some of this, I believe that Symantec should share some of it too.  Why?  Because over the years they have continually provided different bundles of various utilities.  Buying a new bundle with NAV usually cost less than renewing an existing NAV, so I ended up with a mishmash of stuff, whish probably had its hands in the problem that prompted this thread.

So, after cleaning out the landfill, it was time to reinstall NIS 2009, which went smoothly enough.  Until it was time to activate.  For whatever reason, my product key was no longer any good, and the Next button was never enabled.  Oh well, time to call the support line.  I must say I was pleased that I waited no more than a minute or two before I had a real person.  I let him connect to my box and after poking around in the registry for a minute or two, he had pulled my Product Key and after it was pasted in the dialog, the Next button was enabled and I was back in business.   It was really nice to have good customer service from a vendor again; a tip of the cap to JamesPravin.

And finally, yes reese_anschultz, there are now only two copies of ccSvcHost running.

Thanks to all for their comments and insights.  Hope this thread will be beneficial to others in the future.

Did you try identifying the Services behind those four ccsvchst.exe’s with Start > Run > cmd /k tasklist /svc?

Shoot; didn't know I could.

I have, however, filed this away for future use when similar problems arise.

thanks,

Qbee37, I very glad to hear that you managed to get everything cleaned up and working! As you’ve pointed out, getting clean uninstalls for past products has been a problem (for a number of reasons) for many years. With the 2009 products we introduced a new installation technology which we hope will help to improve this moving forward.

People will be able to find the solution much more easily if you click on the green button in the post that was most helpful.  That will allow people to go directly to the solution.:smileywink:
