Norton Internet Security 2009 system scans not working

I have Norton Internet Security 2009.  Last week I noticed that the system scan functions don't seem to work.  Total items scanned remains at 0.  It's as if the scan feature isn't working anymore.  Plus Norton locks up when I try to exit the scan.  I have already removed Norton entirely and reinstalled it with all the updates.  I am still having the same problem.  I have also tried running scans in safemode with no success. I have also, installed Malwarebyets Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware programs.  The scans using both of these products appear to complete but don't find any infected files.  I'm not sure if I have a virus or not.  Any help is appreciated.
