Norton Internet Security 2010 Activation Key

I have 2 pc's that i bought back in 2010.I also purchased NIS 2010 with a 3 pc license.I installed it on the 2 pc's leaving me with one user license left.Well just recently one of the 2 original pc's i bought back in 2010 has broken on me so i just bought another laptop to replace it.As you all know now the current version of NIS is 2012.So i have 2 questions.

1.Will the product key i still have available from my original NIS 2010 activate the 2012 version if i install it or do i need to install the original 2010 version, activate it then use the in product up grade to move up the NIS 2012?

2.Since i no longer have 3 pc's running NIS because one just broke on me will norton reset that last activation key for me just incase i do get a third pc again or will i have to start from scratch and buy another NIS product with a 3 pc lincense to protect all 3 pc's with one lincense key?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Hello NKOTN1

Is the license from your NIS 2010 still a valid one? Most licenses are for 1 year and the countdown started with the installation of  210 NIS on your first computer. Many times now, a new computer or laptop comes with a trial version of some security program. That other trial program would have to be removed unless it is the same program you would want to install on it.

Unless you have been paying to renew the same key every year, the 1 year would be up by now unless it was a 3 year license. Even if you only used 2010 NIS on 2 computers at that time, the 3rd computer allowed would also have expired since the countdown starts for all 3 at the same time.

Yes i have kept the same license renewed every year so the one unused installation should still be good.Thats why i wanted to make sure i didnt loose it after installing NIS 2012 on my new computer And since my old pc it broken i want to get back that installation of NIS to use a at later time if i decide to get a 3 pc.

Oh one more question.Should i contact Norton first to get back the license on the broke computer before i activate the last install on my new computer or should i go ahead and install an activate NIS 2012 on my new computer then contact Norton and tell them about the broke computer to see if they will give me back the one install?

IMHO, I would try to regain the reactivation on the old computer first (showing I have 2 activations left) and then activate 2012 which would change it to one.

That is just my opinion - I feel safer with "one in my hip pocket" prior to using what is "my last one remaining" and then trying to regain it later!  :smileywink:

Thanks. That does sound like the better thing to do.Hopefully i want have to buy another NIS program just to get another key for 3 pc protection.

I hope they give it back to me since the computer is broken.

Hi NKOTN1,

I would recommend that you upgrade all of your computers to NIS 2012 or at least 2011.

Another advantage which was introduced with 2012 is a feature called Norton Management which will allow you in the future to handle situations like freeing up an activation completely on your own without visiting Customer Service.

More on Norton Management can be found below.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
