Norton Internet Security 2010 and Multiple User Accounts in Windows XP Pro

Hello,

About 2 weeks ago, I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2010 from Norton Internet Security 2009.  Everything worked perfectly in NIS 2009.  My wife and I share this computer so there are two user accounts on it.  The problem I have discovered is when she logs on the computer in her user account, Norton Interneet Security 2010 is not working.  It is half there, half not.

Let me explain further...

When in my wife's user account on this computer, NIS 2010 does not  respond at all when you click on the desktop icon.  There is no icon loaded in the task bar, there is no Norton tool bar in her browser.  She cannot scan any downloaded files and her outlook email client does not have the Norton tool bar as well.

Everything works perfectly in my account log in on the computer.  Everything worked flawless in NIS 2009.  Any idea what could be causing this?

Any help and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Plankton,

Both of us are set as "adminstrators."

Hi GregH:

Are you using Windows XP, SP3?

Hi Plankton:

Yes, I am using Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600).

Hi GregH:

Very good!

Please Login to the User Account where NIS2009/NIS 2010 were originally installed.

Let's try reinstalling NIS 2010 from scratch and see if it corrects the problem in question.

Kindly use the NRT (Norton Removal Tool) found here. Read the entire document before using!

After downloading the NRT to your desktop, physically disconnect from the Internet.

Then reboot as directed, run the NRT once more and reboot again.

Reconnect to the Internet.

Now install NIS 2010 from this link and reboot as required.

Run LiveUpdate until all are exausted.

Logout and login as the other user.

Check all functions. Did this correct the problem?

Kindly advise, thanks.

Hi Plankton:

I'll give it a try tomorrow when I have more time to give to this.

Cheers,

Greg

Greg -- I'm using a very similar setup to yours with two users, me and my wife, and we don't hve the problem you describe so it is not inherent.

One background question --

How do you switch from one user to the user? We use Fast User Switching where you do not have to log out of one user and into the other. Are you using this too or do you log out of one and then into the other? We do not use passwords for logging in either.

If you use Fast User Switching is behavior the same if the first user does log out and then the second logs in?

Also does it make any difference which of the two users logs in first or is your wife always the sufferer?

Stick with Plankton but I'd be interested in knowing which way you switch users.

Good question.

The functionality with FUS is the same with NAV/NIS - there should not be any difference.

<< ....  there should not be any difference. >>

Famous lsat words .....

I think it was NIS 2008 where the AntiSpam toolbar could not cope with FUS so my wife got no antispam button when I logged in first and vice versa.

Hi huwyngr:

I am just referencing NAV/NIS 2009/2010. :smileyvery-happy:

You go back further than me! Way back!

I appreciate the information, though.

Hi huwyngr:

With respect to the method of logging on...we've done done it both ways, fast user switching and logging out one and relogging in to another.  She will still have the same problem.  As mentioned before, there never was any problem either way with NIS2009.

Cheers,

Greg

Hi GregH:

What is your current status?

Kindly advise. Thanks.

Hi Plankton:

Just wanted to double check some things before I remove NIS2010.  I have the NIS2010 install application already on my desktop from the previous session back in mid December.  I never deleted it from that session.  Do you want me to use that application or do you want me to download another, different, new application from Norton?  In other words, do you want me to use your link or use the application already on my desktop?

Hi GregH:

Please follow my procedure as posted.

Let us know how you do.

Thanks.

Hi Plankton:

Followed the directions to a "T".  I'm sorry to say the problem is not corrected.

Greg

Hi GregH -

Hmm... too bad that didn't work. :smileysad:

Let's try one more thing...

Please create a new Administrator account and see if it works there.

Please advise when complete.

TIA

Hi Plankton:

I'm afraid the same thing happens with the new "administrator" account.:smileysad:  Do you think I should try and install NIS2010 through my wife's log on?  I really just don't know anymore.  It just figures....should have left well enough alone and not upgraded.

Greg

Hi GregH:

There are many variables at play here - i'm sure through no fault of your own!

Installing again would probably yield the same result.

Let me put out the "feelers" for assistance.

Stay tuned.

BTW - Are you using any other Security Software on this system? Just to be 110% sure!

Greg,

Thanks for the feedback. And whichever order you log in A then B or B then A makes no difference; it's always the same account?

I've read the rest of the messages -- don't be sorry you upgraded; you have a better system and to the best of my knowledge it makes no difference to AV protection if it appears visibly different in one user account. It is functioning on both.

One thing you can check, odd as it may seem -- do you have a Guest account and is it enabled or disabled? If you have one and it is disabled so that it does not show up in the log in list then enable it; if you don't have a Guest account, create one and enable it ......

I'll ask for Staff help in case Plankton has not since they may know of something from experience. Look out for a name in red!
