Norton Internet Security 2011 live updates cause my computer to lock up

I have Vista and NIS 2011.  About 4 days ago NIS came up with an update that caused my computer to lock up.  When I last looked at live update it showed no updates for 3 days.  On day two I did a manual update and update 5 of 9 caused my computer to lock up.  I did the manual update the next day and update 6 of 10 caused my computer to lock up.  In fact for three days I tried the manual updates and my computer locked up each time and none of the updates were accepted.  I tried this at least 3 times each day.  I wanted to keep duplicating the problem for two reasons, I wanted to be certain before I removed NIS and I wanted to correct when I wrote you.

After I pulled the Norton NIS stump out of my computer, it was better rooted than a live oak, my computer does not freeze up.  I am certain Norton will say that the problem was my fault or at least it was not theirs.  They will be correct because it took me 3 times of being burned to finally stop using NIS.

I had to go to three places to get all the NIS out and then clean the registry.  I had to use an industrial strength removal tool.

What would happen is when I would start my computer and live update automatically tried to update my computer it would lock up.  When I open up NIS live update always said updated between 1 and 3 minutes ago so the 2 days immediately aroused my suspicion.

I tried Norton Removal Tool and it did not work.  I tried it 10 times and I had to use a removal program to remove NIS 2011, now my computer does not lock up.  NRT kept locking up, what a bonus.

This is the third and final problem I have had with Norton, I will not put Norton on my computer any more.

Ghost locked up on me and my computer would not boot up.  Doing research CTL ALT G allowed me to bypass and remove Ghost.  That was a week of fun.

Then NIS kindly provided me with the SYMEFA.SYS error so my computer would not boot up.  The Norton Tech support guy had me do a factory restore that caused me about 40 hours of work to get back all my info and Norton refused to accept responsibility, that is they said it was not their fault. A simple 'hey we made a mistake' was all I was looking for.  That was three weeks of fun.

Now the NIS update caused my computer to lock up. Fortunately only three days of fun.

I have no idea who is providing such work for you but I have had my fill of Norton. You will not miss me as a customer, but I will always feel bad because I have used Norton for well over 10 years.  I honestly feel I have gotten my money's worth from Norton, but the continuous problems are just too much for me.

I am writing for two reasons, first to help those who have also been Nortonized, and secondly so perhaps in the event you decide to accept responsibility you might provide a fix for those who chose to remain customers.  If I am the only one affected, then good for Norton.

My wife has Windows 7 on her computer, she has not turned it on for a few days so I have no idea if her computer will be Nortonized or not.

In closing I wish Norton a bright and problem free future.
