You need to trick Norton servers to belive you've an older version, because this is a minor update, so select version 20 of NIS. This is because norton servers are set to detect only major version changes of a system. All steps are explained in the post.(I think somebody have mentioned its now available via live update stream. I'm not sure about it)
Seems you're also going through the same path I also have passed. I too had to go through this problem. For my 3Mbps internet connection, it took over 5 hours to complete downloading the update!
Please donot try the below unless you are ready to take risk of losing your settings of NIS.
Actually afte the download completes there will be two plugins, a text file, NISDownloader.exe file, an executable for updating NIS, a virus definition file (Untill download finishes, it'll be randomname.tmp) inside the folder here:
You can manually download the virus definition file from symantec or norton corresponding to your product, copy or move it to NIS folder (Click on the shortcut of folder created by the program on desktop, paste the definitions update file you've downloaded to it, rename it as symcdefs.exe)
Note you must first close the downloader after clicking cancel.
Now double click the file NIS-UpgradeESDND-21.1.1.7-EN.exe.
It worked for me in test environment with win7 UL and win 8.1 pro
Hey buddy add this too, you must perform a manual live update( something nearly 200 Mb) after restarting system when installation finishes. (Sorry I left this out)
I know this thread is marked as solved and the OP got their system back up and running smoothly which is the most important thing, but FWIW, the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool would have also installed 21.1.1.7 and that would have been without the risk of losing any settings or the ID Safe Data, nor having to lie about your vrsion on the Norton Update Center.
But I think the basic purpose of using NRNR is for reinstalling Norton product in the case of problems, not for a mere updation.
I agree its also a work around for slow downloading of updates. There will be different ways to solve a problem and attain a common output. Anyway thanks yank for adding that point.
I'm kind of having the same situauion as this poster so I thought I ask in here. My liveupdate had 197 MB and everytime I would try to update it would get to a certain point but not the full update. So I decided to finally upgrade to the newest NIS. I ran download manger and at the same time tried to do live update, once again it got to a certain point but not full, so I gave up on that . I focus my attention back on the download manager for the latest NIS (thinking it would solve my problem) It got up to 40 % and then I recieved a message that told me micosoft esstentials was affecting my download manager, so it asked to unstall that.. which I did. Some how I got the newset NIS without the full dowload *confused* So now my NIS Says 21.1.17 but it says Liveupdate is not available .. is this normal? It tells me to press fix now and I just did.. now I have 208.14 mb to download. Is this the process in downloading this new NIS? I somehow feel that an error may have occur, but i'm not sure. Any suggestions? Any help is welcomed.
