"Norton Internet Security" and "Windows X.P."

Aha That's what you are talking about.

I thought I read something that support for XP was extended?

But you need to pay to get the support (Security Updates) past April 2008.

I guess you are talking about Norton or Microsoft?

Microsoft.

And that should be April 2009, not 2008 as that has already passed!

Given that you would be using Norton 2008 or NIS 2009 what do you think? Why would what Microsoft do affect NIS?

It is a good practice to update your operating system with the current patches and fixes. While you will be safer with Norton Internet Security than without it, but it is not wise to put your system at risk by leaving security flaws unpatched.

There seems to be some confusion here.

From April 2009, Microsoft will stop Releasing Security Updates for Windows X.P., the free ones anyway.  Since from April 2009 Windows X.P. Users will not be able to get Security Updates for W. X.P..  Would Users, who are no longer getting O.S. Updates still be Fully Safe from Internet Threats, using the Latest N.I.S.?

For me the only confusion is:

Why you expect Norton to predict the effect of Microsoft ceasing to supply security updates for Microsft products. Norton deals with attacks not with the holes in other people's products. Norton have indicated their policy on this.

You refer to XP as if it were one product which it is not. Go to Microsoft and read what it says about its own policy:

Here is a link to the table of

Microsoft Support Lifecycle

Product support lifecycle information by product family

Windows XP Home Edition

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Windows XP Professional

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

The table at that location gives the dates. I would have pasted it in here but the way it is formated for their web page makes this almost impossible but you will find that it is quite different for Home and Business versions -- go have a look.

And the FAQs that they link to include:

17. What is the Security Update policy?

Microsoft has not changed its Security Update policy:

Business and Development software

Security updates will be available through the end of the Extended Support phase (five years of Mainstream Support plus five years of the Extended Support) at no additional cost for most products. Security updates will be posted on the Microsoft Update Web site during both the Mainstream and the Extended Support phase.

Consumer, Hardware, and Multimedia products

Security updates will be available through the end of the Mainstream Support phase.

Hi Floating_Red,

I'm not usually in the habit of speculating on what might happen several months from now involving Microsoft or threats in the world, and I won't start now. With the many different layers of protection that Norton Internet Security provides, you will certainly be more protected with it than you would be without it. "Fully Safe" is really more dependent on the user's behavior in not downloading possibly malicious files, and not installing unknown programs.

From what I can see, Windows XP will get extended updates through  4/8/2014!  Hardly time to panic…

I am just wondering if Users would be fully safe using N.I.S. - Latest Version - without having the Microsoft Updates for their computer.
