Norton Internet Security: Cannot Uninstall

I recently discovered that my norton internet security was not functioning properly, and would only open as a small window with a white space.  After some searching, I found that the likely culprit was the system restore (I had recently been forced to do one).  Anyways, I have been trying for the past several hours to remove norton form my computer, with little success.

Firstly, I tried downloading the norton remover tool.  Upon running it, it said that Norton Utilities 15 (something that came with my norton internet security) had to be removed.  I uninstalled it from the uninstall program in its folder in my program files (X86), but the norton remover tool still insisted that it was there.  A search of my entire C: Drive revealed some norton utilities folders in my AppData.  After deleteing those, the norton remover tool still said I had to delete norton utilities before proceeding.

At this point I gave up on the norton remover tool.  I tried to uninstall NIS from the control panel, but after doing that there were still norton folders littered around my program files (X86) folder.  I tried deleting those, but it said they could not be deleted as they were still in use.  I moved into my programs files and deleted a folder called Symantec, which went without issue.  However, that did not let me delete NIS from my program files (X86).

I discoverd that I could still move this folder around, and so I tried to move it to a USB.  Half of it went, but the other half of the folder still said it could not be deleted because it was in use.

Lastly, I went into my registry, and delete a file called norton there.  I then open command line and tried to forcibly remove the norton folder claimed to be in use.  This gave me no error message, but it did not work, and the folder is still there.

I do not know how to proceed with this.  I believe the best way would be to get the norton remove tool to work, but I have no idea how I might do that.  Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

PS: I forgot to mention, I have Windows 7 64 bit.  That should be significant.

Well, your were right to think I missed deleting those files.  The uninstall went great; thank you so much for your help!

You are very welcome.

OK.  This topic helped me too.  But, After a few more days, I could not launch nor uninstall Norton Antivirus...so a second time I downloaded and ran the Norton Anti-virus Removal tool and subsequently reinstalled Norton Antivirus - Comcast Xfinity edition.  So far so good, but since it has happened twice, I'm afraid it will recur.

Good advice in this thread so far, but how do we prevent recurrences?

Cheers!
