Norton Internet Security Causes Long Delay Before Enail Download Starts

I just installed the downloaded latest version of Norton Internet Security. I accepted all the default options. I had a previous version of Norton AntiVirus installed, which I removed using the Norton downloaded Uninstall NAV tool before installing Internet Security. NIS seems to work ok but has caused a 40+ second delay before beginning email download into Thunderbird. Thunderbird immediately reports the number of emails to be downloaded but then waits this long period before actually beginning the download. I see other have reported this issue but I see no resolutions. Why the long delay and what can be done to eliminate it? Before NIS was installed, this delay did not happen.

Yes, I previously the Windows firewall. I checked the NIS rule for Thunderbird and it was already set to Allow as the install default.

The curious thing about this delay is that is occurs between the time the number of emails to download is determined and reported by Thunderbird, and the time when the download actually starts, as determined by the Thunderbird count of downloaded emails. NI could not yet be checking email as the download of those emails has not started. So, what is causing the delay between the initial check for email and the start of the download? This delay is about 402 seconds! The delay is the same regardless of the number of emails to be downloaded, whether just 2 or 120. This delay is definitely since the install of NIS.

Sorry, that is a typo. The delay is consistently about 42 seconds.

Hi. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, as I use Windows Mail. Perhaps someone familiar with Thunderbird, might have some ideas.

I'm assuming the transition from NAV to NIS went without a hitch, as I'm wondering if the install might have been corrupted in some way.

Unless someone has an idea of what your particular problem might be, you could try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will give you a clean install.  http://www.norton.com/nrnr

Use as a last resort, in case another user can help you.

Hi lmcdavid,
have you tried disabling norton smart firewall and see if that helps?
42 seconds will not be a big deal for me unless norton is not properly doing its job.
