I purchased NIS (V5 will not work with OS 10.5.8, so V4 must be used) for MAC a few days ago online at the Norton website, downloaded, ran the installation, and restarted. However, after startup the configfuration assistant did not run (as indicated by the last screen before restart), no Norton/Symantec service showed in the Activity Monitor, and no icon was added to the desktop.
After several chat sessions I was advised to download and run a Norton product removal program and re-download and install NIS V4 for MAC. This now enabled the configfuration assistant to run after restart, however subsequently, there was still no Norton/Symantec service, and no icon. In short no indication that NIS is present.
Any further attempt to install results in the original situation, i.e., no configuration assistant after restart etc., perhaps because a configuration is already detected. However the last screen after an apparently successful install before restart always indicates that the configuratiuon assistant should run after restart.
Can anyone suggest a solution or tell me what Norton/Symantec service should run, and in which folder should this service program be located ?
I downloaded the uninstall program from a link or instructions provided by a chat session, I do not have a record. The folder is called RemoveSymantecMacFiles and it contains
RemoveSymantecMacFiles.command and
ReadMe.txt
There is a Symantec Solutions folder inside the Applications folder, and it contains,
Symantec Uninstaller.app
Symantec Scheduler.app
Register Your Software
Read Me Files/
Norton Firewall.app
Norton Confidential.app
Norton AntiVirus.app
LiveUpdate.app

I am used to Norton programs on WinXP, but am relatively new to MACs. I would have expected some indication on the Desktop of a Norton program running however I cannot see any. I would like to find out what should be visable such as a program icon on the lower edge docking bar, or the top menu bar.
There should be a yellow and black icon for the Norton QuickMenu toward the right side of your menu bar, do you see that? Are there applications in /Applications/Norton Solutions?
Sorry, I missed your list of applications from the previous email. Nothing is installed on the desktop, but you should be able to launch from the QuickMenu. If you don't see that, can you run any of the apps in Symantec Solutions?
Which application should run at startup to produce the yellow/black icon, and which should run after installation and restart to provide a configuration menu ?
It's a program called UIAgent. It sounds like it did not run for some reason. Can you run Norton AntiVirus and run the Gather Support Information command. I'll contact you privately with an email address to send the info.
