Norton Internet Security is Performing Background Scan - locks computer

When my computer is idle a popup appears in the lower left corner of the screen stating "Norton Internet Security is Performing Background Scan". My computer then locks, mouse does not work, all programs locked, and I'm forced to to manually press the power button and restart my computer. This happens at least 3-4 times a week and is becoming very annoying. I've contacted Norton Support, but never got a reply. I recieved a popup from Norton stating "Error "3035,2" after you install a Norton 2009 Product, download and run fix tool". I downloaded and ran the tool, but the Norton Internet Security background scan still locks my computer.

Any advice on how to stop this incredibly annoying problem.

The following advice deends on how soon you can apply it.  Sometimes the system won't allow you to make the change.

When the slowdown starts:

1.  Open TaskManager (Control-Alt + Delete)

2.  Click on Processes

3.  Click on CPU once or twice (so that the highest ram users are shown at the top).

4.  Right-click on the ccsvshst.exe that is taking up the highest percentage (that should be the one run by the system).

5.  Click on Set Set Priority and choose Belownormal

6.  Close the TaskManager

This change will persist until you reboot the computer.  If you apply the priority change before the system slows down, you shouldn't even experience the problem.

This scan is something your computer must pass through, though, in order to establish levels of trust.  Thwarting the scan by shutting down the computer when it appears to be locked up keeps the process from completing and it will merely start again at the next opportunity.  The lower priority allows you and it to work in tandem until the scan is complete.

Please get back to us and let us know how this worked out for you.

Hi Bob,

Just run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you see the message "No more updates..." and then run a full system scan. Check whether it detects/removes any threats or whether the full system scan locks the computer. Turn off the Idle Time Scan from NIS 2009 settings in meantime.

Yogesh

If TaskManager does not allow you to reset the Priority of ccSvcHst.exe in the System domain, it is probaby because TaskManager does not see you as having System rights.

In this case, download the lovely little PrcView program from PCWorld at PrcView.  This freebie (from the developer and MS) will give you the access you need and works like a gem.  In fact, it is so good that Symantec appears to have bought the rights and includes in their Norton System Works.  This older version is just as good for anything here and works on any base through XP(3).  It has a nicer and more versatile interface than TaskManager (but is limited to processes only).
