I have a desktop computer that has Windows 7 and has Norton Internet Security 2012. Late last night, when I turned my computer on, Windows Acton Center reported an error that say “Norton Internet Security reports that it is turned off”, “Windows Firewall and Norton Internet Security both report that they are turned off”, and “Windows Defender and Norton Internet Security both report that they are turned off.” The file path to these errors is C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\19.8.0.14\WSCStub.exe.
Beside these errors messages, my Norton Internet Security seems to work fine. I did a quick scan and check for any updates. I also restarted my computer several times.
Once installation is complete, open NIS and manually Run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates found". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no more updates found" and then reboot one last time.
Once totally updated, don't forget to Restore/Import your ID Safe data.
When I did this last night, it did work. But this morning the error messages show back up. When I uninstall NIS from my computer, Norton got me two uninstall preference: “I plan to reinstall a Norton product. Please leave my settings behind” and “Please remove all user data.” I selected “I plan to reinstall a Norton product. Please leave my setting behind”, should I selected the second option?
Please bear with me - I went back and double checked the following and it appears there may be some confusion in the way it appears. See my notes in blue below. Please try it again to double check.
1. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
regsvr32 /u WMIUTILS.DLL (there is a space between32 and /u and a space between /u and WMIUTILS.DLL)
3. Click OK.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
6. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
regsvr32 WMIUTILS.DLL (there is a space between 32 and WMITLS.DLL)
7. Click OK.
8. Restart the computer.
Also, Option 2 (Remove all user data) would be the best route to go. But bear in mind any customized settings will be lost, you may want to write them down if you have any and also do not forget to backup ID Safe.
