Norton Internet security subscription renewal and account setup

Hello;

My product subscription on Norton Internet Security 2010 is about to run out and I’d like to renew it. When I hit the “express renewal” button, I am brought to the Norton renewal site where I am asked for my credit card information and billing address. Fair enough. But the system won’t let me proceed unless I set up an account with Norton (something Internet Security 2010 has always wanted me to do and which I resolutely refuse to do since I don’t need Norton to babysit my product code).

Question: how can I renew my product subscription without having to set up an account with Norton?

I thank all who take the time to respond, but please note that I do not wish to engage in any discussions about why or why not  to set up an account with Norton (and the benefits or otherwise of doing so). It is my preference that I do not wish to do so, so let’s leave it at that.

Kind regards,

Tonia

Speak to OnLine CUstomer Support since this is not a technical matter which is what we deal with here.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the SCAN button.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Good luck .....

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. The one about purchasing it in a store is a good one and where I live the new retail version is half the price of the online subscription renewal.

As for Norton chat, yes it is relatively efficient but the Norton guys are always trying to upsell and get personal information (phone number, e-mail etc) which I find annoying. But they did help with thye issue I was having.

By the way, one cannot renew a subscription online without creating a Norton account (this from the Norton chat guy). But he also suggested buying a retail version and just using the product key that comes with the retail version and entering that when doing the online renewal.

Thanks again for your help and your replies.

Kind regards,

Tonia

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm glad it's sorted out for you.

Would you please let us know, after you've done it, whether even buying a copy and using its KEY to activate, can be done without creating a MyNortonAccount.

I would have thought that since what you buy is a licence to use a specific number of copies that registering the licence as part of activating it would be an inherent obligation since they have to keep track of licencees in some way.

One thing that may be confusing is that software and hardware makers often have two kinds of "registration"

 -- one, often associated with the warranty, but not necessarily a legal obligation, (and Norton does have a warranty -- a 60 day money back warranty even on the opened and used product !) is a marketing ploy to get your email address and profiile. Those I don't bother with unless there is a feature I want.

 -- the other is the licencing to the user of the software. As someone at one time engaged in industrial property rights -- copyrights and patents as the CEO of a company that owned them -- registering the licence is a normal procedure for understandable purposes just like registering that you own a house.

The MyNortonAccount associated with activating a licence on a computer is in the second category in my opinion and experience -- ie I don't get blanketed with Norton publicity just because I activated my licence. I may get a message popup that I can get a free upgrade to the next version or that my licence is running out but I regard that as reasonable service.

Just my 2¢ .....

So if you can activate your account without creating a MyNortonAccount (which only asks for your email address and a password) I'll be interested to know this ..... and surprised!

Thanks for checking in here -- you know where to find us when you need some technical help.

Hi Hugh;

Thanks for your thoughts. After some consideration I decided to upgrade to NIS 2011 (I even posted a question on how to best achieve this), and so will not be using the NIS 2011 product key to renew my subscription for NIS 2010. In the end I agree with your point of view that registering with Norton is probably not a big deal, but I am just annoyed at what is seemingly every software company trying to get personal information.

Regarding your question about whether an account can be activated without creating an account, the Norton chat guy told me that this is possible, and I in fact activated my retail version of NIS 2010 without creating an account. So I suspect this can be done.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

Kind regards,

Tonia

I'm glad you got it all sorted out in a way you are happy with. I agree with you about the marketing type registration but I'm not aware that creating the specific MyNortonAccount which contains the KEY and the number of activations available and used does lead to that.

BTW  If you need to find your KEY there is also a file called KEY.txt tucked away under All Users ..... Data ...Symantec

Panzer-88, the upselling during the online chat that you talk about also occurs during the online renewal process through your mynortonaccount.  Still not a big problem because you can just click to go ahead continue the renewal order without accepting any offers for increased products and services.
