Norton Internet Security wakes computer from Screensaver

My Internet Security recently updated itself. Ever since this update when my screen saver kicks in and after a few seconds it ends and there is a norton box that pops up. I never have a chance to read what it says so I am confused on what is making norton wake up my computer from screen saver mode. I have looked at the norton task and after every occasion it lists ccsvchst.exe as the program that runs after idle time. I assume this is what is waking up my computer but have no clue how to fix the issue. Any ideas?

Hi nslough,

Welcome to Norton Community!

Let us know the version of Norton Internet Security you use. You can find it from Help & Support > About. Also, let us know your Operating System.

This thread has several suggestions for changes you can make to your settings to improve the situation.

My version is 17.5.0.0127

My screen saver comes up after the set time, then the screen saver stops, the desktop is displayed and  I see a small Norton window flash above the sys tray, I haven't been able to see what it says yet.  Then after the set time, the screen saver starts again.  This cycle just loops, so I don't get into the power saving mode (monitor and HDs stay on).  ANyone else having this problem?

Update -

Thanks for moving my posting to another with the same problem.  I didn't see the previous postings, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

Some background -

I'm using the A/V program, 17.5.0.127  My full idle scan is set to weekly, and my idle time to 10 minutes.

I've had A/V 2010 installed for months, but I just notice the problem within the past day or two.

A related symtom was that sometimes the screen saver would start, and I'd hear a lot of disk activity. When I moved the mouse to see the desktop again, I'd see the Norton messge saying it was running a full idle time scan, but this happened more than once... as if the scan was running mutiple times the same day.

I turned on Silent Mode for an hour to see what would happen, and in Silent Mode, everything ran normally.

With the Silent Mode off again, the problem returns.  A few seconds after the screen saver starts, the desk top appears and Norton full idle scan message flashes.  (I don't hear any disk activity).

I hope Norton finds a fix for this.

Another update.

I turned off the Idle Time Scans, but the problem is still occurring.

I did notice that the first idle period after a booted up this morning worked, the screen saver came up, and a few minutes later the monitor turned off, but the next time I used it, it started looping with the problem again.

.

Here is an update.

Still can't figure out what is doing this. I have a full system scan scheduled for Mon, Wed, and Fri. On Monday I noticed that while it was running the full system scan it let the computer sleep. On Tuesday the computer would go to sleep as well. This morning I left my computer on and now it is back to waking up. Really starting to get annoying!

nslough, the only thing that should wake a system from a standard screensaver is keyboard or mouse activity. What screensaver are you using? I've seen cases where the disk drives, when active, cause small vibrations which jiggle the mouse. If you turn the mouse over so that it can't 'move' does the problem continue?

There is a problem as nslough described.  I have the exact same problem.

If it helps, I've found that it only involves the screen saver.  I changed my settings so that the monitor turns off before the screen saver is activated, and that arrangement works every time...  After the specified idle time, the monitor turns off and stays off until I move the mouse.   If I have the monitor set to turn off after the screen saver is activated, the screen saver runs for 10 - 20 seconds, then the P/C awakens with the Norton pop-up flashing (this cycle looping to infinity).

This is occuring on my desk top P/C,  I haven't seen it happen on my notebook.

The screen saver on my desk top P/C  is the Microsoft provided "My Picture Slideshow",  set to 5 minutes.

Final Update (I hope):

I reset my sceen saver and power settings the way I orginally had them, so that I could make a video of the problem.

Guess what?  Everything worked normally all day today.

I also noticed that my notebook, which never had the problem, had not been updated to 17.5.0.0127.

So my assumtion is that the problem was in 17.5.0.0127 which is why not everyone was affected, and I assume that Symantec quietly fixed it.

I wish we could point to that but there haven't been any updates to 17.5 other than regular definitions, which shouldn't make this difference. I'm glad to hear that your problem seems to be resolved and I hope that it stays that way but for now, I don't think we know what the root cause was.

It worked right for a couple of days but it's back.

I have a short video of it this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnTZOhaZfNA

You can see the screen saver start, then stop with a Norton pop-up flash at the lower left.

After I made the video, I changed my setting to have the monitor shut off before the screen saver started.  As I mentioned above, Norton doesn't wake up the computer then.  I then thought I'd try makeing a clearer video, but when I reset the monitor shut off time to come after the screen saver starts, the problem went away.

Jeff, which operating system do you use? I see a number of articles from Microsoft that describe similar symptoms to your on Vista operating systems (without a Norton product.) They specifically spell out that your power saving setting must be shorter than your regular screensaver setting (Photos screensaver). It doesn't explain the unexpected exit from the screensaver but I suspect that the two issues are related. If you change your screensaver does the problem go away?

Reese - I'm using xp sp3

I don't think the problem started until the .127 Norton update. (I don't really want to sware to that though, because there have been times in the past were it seemed that the screensaver was not activated. It's possible that I didn't notice it cycling like it does this time, and reapplying the screensaver selection fixed it in the past.... but not now).

If I make the power saving setting shorter then the screensaver setting, I'll never see the screensaver because the monitor will shut off.  There is no problem (other then not seeing the screensaver) when I set it that way, and doing so, seems to make the problem go away, at least for some time.

I can't try another screensaver right now, because since I last flip/flopped the screensaver/power saver start times last night, it's been working correctly again.  If the problem comes back, I'll try another screensaver.

BTW, I said the pop-up flashed on the lower left of the screen.  That S/B lower right, above the systray.

Hello,

i have the same problem after last NIS 2010 update :-(

Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

After NIS popup the screensaver  is off.

Hi, same problem here.  The words on the window that flashes when interrupting screen saver is "Norton is performing background task.  Full system scan in progress."  Determined this after much staring at many interruptions. Just now, I had Norton Tasks screen open and watched what happens there when screen saver goes off.  Under the "Background Jobs" section, the line for Idle Full Scan," Last Runs" time changes to moment screen saver goes off, under Ran during Idle is 'Yes', and under Status is 'Cancelled'.  This appears to be what's causing the problem.

I ran a Full Scan to see if this would stop the screen saver interruptions to no effect.  The problem with above line is that a Full Scan is NOT running.  Appears to be a glitch of some sort.

I had an hour with remote assistance who said Norton system is running properly.  He changed the quick scan time from weekly to monthly - don't know why, but that did nothing.

Appreciate any help from the wizards out there.

Just wanted to update and let everyone know that I am still having issues.

Exactly this problem! Norton 17.5.0.127 awakens computer not only in screensaver, but awakens the display when the omissions(off) and does not move the computer into sleep mode Windows 7 x86.  :robotsad:

Norton is causing my screen-saver to burp back to desktop as well . The original excuse was Google Updater not allowed . I canned Google Updater . Now It is burping on Spyware Doctor . I am NOT canning that one . Please get Norton to stop ruining my screensaver . Let it do it's bidding in a way that it doesn't destroy my screensaver from running . Give me OPTIONS in the HISTORY to allow certain items at my own risk . There are no options on these that it burps on after 10 seconds . I am sick and tired of this already . Fix it , or I will find another to protect my system . Norton is becoming too unfriendly , and at times as this , has been THE CAUSE of the problem I have . Apparently there is no testing before they feed us the new stuff . We are the test case . Sickening .
