Norton Internet Security Won't Open, Fails to fix risks, and Runs Slow

Last night I had an error where I couldn't update norton. I went to the website to see if anyone else encountered this error and quite a few people did.  I followed what was posted and downloaded and installed the new version of Internet Security. Now when I double click or right click to open it took any where from 6 - 10 minutes to open. I restarted my computer thinking this could fix it as it has done in the past for a program opening slow. After the restart it still opened slow any where from 6 - 10 minutes. Not only that but it failed to fix two problems "intrusion prevention" and 'Browser Protection" The program also seems to scan slower than before.

Did it install right?

If not how would i go about reinstalling it properly.

If you want to reinstall the latest version, you should start by backing up your Identity Safe data if you use that feature.

Go to Settings - Web - Identity Safe and click on configure beside Export data. If you do not see this option, you need to log into your identity safe. Save it twice. Once as a DAT file and once as a CSV file.

If you want to maintain a local vault for your Identity safe, you will have to reinstall the 2012 version first.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt

Download the NIS 2012 from   www.norton.com/nis12
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Run the installer for NIS 2012.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Import your Identity Safe data.

Test to see if your system is working now.

Many are waiting to upgrade to the 2013 version because of some issues like you found. If you want to ugrade to the 2013 version again, you can right click on the NIS icon in the system tray at the bottom right of your screen, and click on Check for New Version. Then follow the instructions.

Thank you this fixed the problem and it's running fine now.

Glad to hear you got your system back.

Just curious, did you stay with 2012 or did you upgrade to 2013 again?

I decided to stay with 2012

OK

Just keep an eye on the forums here and watch for reports that 2013 issues have been fixed.

> watch for reports that _2013 issues have been fixed_

That comment is way oversimplified.

The words "software" and "fixed" shouldn't appear in the same sentence.  Fixes, if they're good, merely reduce the number of problems in the software, not eliminate them.  If they're not good, they introduce even more problems.

A look at this forum starting in September of last year shows that NIS 2012 was updated continuously and often.  Some significant fixes did not occur until later in the "model year".

Experienced users do not upgrade to the new version until _at least_ the first major update.  Even then they wait to see how others' experience with it is going.  Especially if they have non-technical people using the computers who can't handle problems.  Or if they have mission critcal computers.

The exception, in the other direction, is if you have a "spare" computer that you can experiment with.  One that no one relies on.

I agree that most software will never be 100% error free. That is too much to ask when there are millions of combinations of software and hardware that have to be made compatible.

I guess my point is that there will be posts here when the major issues are corrected, and readers will be able to use this information to decide when they want to make the upgrade.

Brand new installation of Norton and browsing is unbelievable!!!  There were no issues with browsing in pre-installation so it can be safetly assumed that browsing is affected by Nortor Internet Security install.   If this is a standard install for this product then there is a serious problem.

As a new user to the product, I'm not inclined to try to figure out all the different setting to play with to fix something that should have not been broken!

Please list the solution to "slow internet browsing"or the product will be removed.  Thank you.

There is a new update to the Norton products that has addressed a number of issues.

Be sure you have run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Also, try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your installation and fix what it finds.

If this does not help, if you provide some information about your system, it may help the volunteers here to find a solution for you.

Please provide,

Norton product Version number...Support - About

Operating system and service pack.

Which browser and version are you using?
