Norton IS2010 Full Scan Freezing My Computer

Hi there,

I have a problem with Norton IS2010 on my computer. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 on it and then installed Norton IS2010. I have found many threads about this issue but none with a fix that applies to my problem. There are no software that could conflict with Norton since Norton is the only program I installed after a clean Windows 7 installation. I've tried re-installing it but I still get the same issue. It freezes when I manually ask it to do a Full Scan. Tried it in Safe Mode but it got stuck again. It does not always freeze at the same file (after 15k, 19k and 24k for the last three times I tried.) Basically everything looks fine until it gets stuck scanning the same file forever. At that point, if I try to click on anything, the whole computer freezes including the mouse and the only way to fix it is to force a manual reboot. Quick scans are working just fine. I thought it might be a hardware problem but PC-Doctor did not detect any problem at all on a full hardware scan and now I am out of ideas.

My computer is an HP a6734f shipped with Windows Vista Home Premium on which I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello JF_089

What version of NIS 2010 are you running now? Have you run live update until you have no more updates to get and then do a final reboot?  Have all the drivers been updated.?

Yes I forgot to mention it. I ran Live Updates and should then have the latest version of NIS2010 running (17.7.0.12) and I did reboot my computer after updating it. I then tried to do a Full Scan and that is when I came across the freezing problem. As for the drivers, they all seem to be up to date (I did run Windows Updates.) I will check them manually though if you think it might be the cause of the problem.

Edit: I just noticed a couple of optional updates were now available and I am now installing them (mainly display drivers updates.)

Edit2: I am now starting a new Full Scan after installing the optional updates (mainly sound and graphic drivers) to see if the problem is still there.

Hello JF_089

Please do NOT get drivers from windows updates. Please get all your drivers that are necessary from the manufacturers of the various parts of your computer that need drivers, for example, if you use Nvidia vid card, get the drivers from NVidia, not from windows updates.

I have had the experience of being offered sound drivers from windows updates and they weren't for the onboard sound that I had at the time. It messed up the sound and caused problems.

Hi JF_089

Try running chkdsk /r from the command line (DOS) prompt to check you hard disk is OK - there may be an issue there that is causing the hang you are experiencing. Since this is your C: drive the chkdsk will run when you reboot.

After updating each driver one by one and rebooting the computer, it seems like the problem was fixed. I left a Full Scan running all night and this morning it has finally completed without freezing or anything. I didn't know that not up-to-date drivers could cause Norton to freeze like that.

Thank you both of you for offering your solutions.
