Norton keeps blocking ports

Okay I've noticed a really weird situation on my computer. I'm a happy Norton customer running Internet Security 2010. But recently I checked my History tab and saw that Norton was blocking an "unused" port 2 to 3 times per MINUTE.

I figured out what program is using the port and that is my uTorrent client. The listen port is set to the same port that is being blocked. I tried changing the listen port and the Norton history tab updated but now with that new port being blocked. So that all indicates it is indeed uTorrent.

The weird thing however is, my client gives me a green OK signal and I can download torrents fine. The annoying thing is that my history is spammed with these firewall block notifications and it's really annoying. I already tried adding uTorrent to the trusted programs list for the firewall but it doesn't seem to help. I also tried putting uPnP off but that also didn't give any results.

Can anyone please help me out it's really frustrating

This is normal.

When you disconnect from one or more of your peers (and this is done off and on, automatically, or when you close your torrent client), you disconnect, but they and their clients don't know that, and keep on trying to connect to your IP. Since you are no longer connected to them, but they keep trying to connect, the port is considered "unused", and is blocked.

That's just how it works, really. Nothing to worry about, though. And the connection attempts can continue for many hours, even days, after you close the connection to your peers or the torrent client entirely. Until they update or close their clients too, at which point they stop trying to connect to you.

Thanks, at least I don't have to worry about anything then :)

However I must ask, can I disable this specific logging from showing in the history?

Hello No_u

Please remember that by using programs like that, you are many times opening yourself up to malware. Use a lot of caution if you feel you must use programs like that. If you check out the Forum, you will see threads about people getting malware from sites like that. Just a word of warning here.

I am not 100% sure, but I do not think you can disable only this special type of logging and nothing else.

Still, that is from opening the downloaded files, not from using the torrent client itself. There are no known vulnerabilities like that in an updated uTorrent.

And, there is a vast difference in using a random public torrent tracker and a private member-only Scene tracker. The latter never contain malware infected downloads (and Scene material in general do not, either. The Scene is very strict with their rules - and any Scene group including malware in their releases would be banned instantly. Which would mean disgrace :D ).

Well then I guess I'll just have to live with it - Thanks

Also thanks for the warning, I'm a long time downloader so I'm aware of what can happen. I do try to watch out and only download trusted torrents with lots of seeds/peers :smileywink:. My second layer of defense is Norton itself. But you're right everything can happen.

I guess I'll hangout a bit more on these forums, seems like an active community.

EDIT: I also only download from scene groups like Bombastus said.

If you click on the utorrent rule in the program rules, click modify, and click modify again on the screen that opens, there my be a tab under advanced that you can uncheck to reduce logging.

Only gives me 2 options that put even more logging into the history tab to show whenever I make any connection.
