Has anyone else noticed that on Windows 8 Norton 2013 can be killed via task manager? That should not be - and would suggest malware can shut down Norton, this is a BIG CONCERN??????

If you check task manager, be sure you have clicked on Show Processes form all users. You should see or more instances of ccSvcHst.exe, one for the logged in user, and one for System.

You may be able to shut down the one that is for the User Interface, but the System process, which would be the actual background protection, should be protected from removal.

I do not use Win 8, so can you check this for us?

Please let us know.

I am running Windows 8 Pro and I was unable to terminate ccsvchst.exe for Norton Internet Security (20.2.0.19) for the SYSTEM or USER using the Task Manager (running with administrative privileges), nor was I able to terminate the Norton Management for SYSTEM.

I was able to terminate Norton Management for the USER and Norton Safety Minder for both SYSTEM and USER. However, Norton Safety Minder restarted itself after a couple of minutes.

I have had a few occasions of NIS crashing on Windows 8 (with some of the earlier versions of NIS2013) in which case the program could be terminated.

Hi tsg1984,

Please check Settings > General > Product security > Norton Product Tamper Protection > ON!  Thius setting shoujld be on by default - but check it anyway.  If you change it, be sure to use the Apply button.

Yes that correct, you cannot remove Norton via task manager...... Yes one process you can kill, but not main system files/Norton processes!!!! Symantec Service Framework (ccSvcHst.exe) access is denied everytime you try to kill the process. I have tried 15 times so-far with no success...........

That is good. Norton is designed to protect itself from malware attacking the Norton files and having their way with your system.

There is a video on youtube where NIS 2013 was killed by a rootkit - can that occur with all antivirus software??

If someone with the required knowledge works hard enough, they can defeat any system. That is why security companies are fighting a constant battle to try to stay ahead of the malware writers.

All security companies are targets for these attacks.
