Norton locks up and mcui32.exe is using ALOT of cpu at time

today I had norton history running up with ie8 in backround and when I went to click something norton locked up. I look in task manager and I see Mcui32.exe using 50%-100% of cpu. the file is signed by symantec, 29,144 k of memory. When I right click on it te only option I have is to perform administrative tasks. whats going on here?

ALSO I cant close norton EVEN through task manager

Please have a look in this thread to see if anything can assist.  There have been issues with the Smart Creen filter and the indexing of Search 4.0 which seems to cause a loop.

That should be the Smart Screen filter not Smart Creen.  In case you were wondering.

thanks for the reply.  Norton wont close no matter what I do. SHould I restart the computer? Iv never had this problem before. Norton usually runs fine

In this case you will have to do a Hard Boot (power down and then back up); if Windows wants to recover just have it boot normally.  Then check to see if you have some software like Search 4.0 or Google Desktop Search installed.  These can cause this type of looping where the increased History file is being accessed by the search which Norton writes to history which changes the file which is accessed by the search software, etc .

only norton locked up not the whole computer. I was just looking through firewall logs and then iwhen I clicked on one norton locked up

Yes, but double processes trying to access the same file / data will cause one of them to lock up.

Sounds very similar to a problem I have been having for some time now. Could you post some specific symptoms? For me liveupdate works but with a wrong time stamp, scans stop working altogether, and ccsvchst.exe is found unresponsive upon attempting to restart windows. Is this similar to your problem or does norton simply lock-up altogether for you?
